Thank you. I'm attaching a mockup of the issue that hopefully makes the problem more clear. I believe this issue only started in the last two weeks. So something was changed recently. Please let me know if you need any more information.

At rush hour, the traffic turning left on the green arrow from Main backs up because the lights at Central and William no longer seem to be coördinated with the lights on Main. Also, there is an extremely long delay of the red light coming down William to Central.

There is about a 30second period at William and Central where not a single direction has a green light. Cars on William Street have to wait two cycles of the Central St lights for a green light in their direction.

I timed the Main St / William St light and it's red all four ways for 15 seconds.

It's possible that all this bad light behavior was a byproduct of the July 5th light malfunction at the adjacent intersection.

Can the Stoneham DPW confirm whether these lights can be returned to normal operation? It's been nearly 2 weeks now with no action.

Stoneham DPW 2: It's been over a month with no action and yet the problem still exists. Do you have an update you can share with us?

It is believed that an electrical issue caused corruption of the traffic signal’s control data that runs the lights at Main Street / William Street / Central Street. The early 1980’s controller has limited abilities and had to be reprogrammed in the field from scratch. As a result the intersection runs different from what driver’s normally would anticipate. The Town has authorized the funds to install a new controller to get the lights running efficiently. It is currently being programmed by a subcontractor and every effort is being made to have it fully tested and operational before school starts. Your patience and understanding is appreciated.

New Controller installed last Thursday. Additional work needed for pedestrian buttons on Main Street.

I'd like to thank the town workers and the selectmen for making progress on this issue.

The green arrow (left turn) to William St. from Main St. now coincides with the green light, as it used too. I'm sure the parents at the Middle School are happy this has been adjusted.

I'm not sure how the wait times on William St. and Central St. have changed; perhpas someone else has noticed a change. Unfortunately, I don't often go this way...
