Other how come 95% of the lights in New Haven are Miss timed or not timed whatsoever. I am sick and tired of hearing the excuses that I get when I complain to the traffic department. I have hit eight consecutive lights on State Street. This is a joke▶W archiwum
I could not agree more. I moved to New Haven in 1997 and the lights have been malfunctioning for 20 years. Yet we wrong our hands and call for traffic calming. I guess this is acceptable in New Haven.
I've spoken to the mayor in addition to the head of traffic and all I get is bullcrap answers. I asked them how come a city like New York City can keep their lights timed in addition to other middle two large cities in Connecticut but we can't. The answer is simple... they don't give a crap.
Because it would require effort on his part, he would actually have to work rather than just getting paid as another civil servant who only cares about the paycheck in the benefits, not what they were hired for.
Perhaps because the city does not want State and other streets to turn into raceways with cars traveling at lethal speeds, which is what would happen if the lights were synchronized.
If you can give me information on when and where that "study" money came in, I'll tell The Mayor and Doug Hanslaben I'll file a Freedom of Information Act and find out.
There are way too many cars on the road during daytime hours for that to occur. In addition if you drive around enough you'll notice that the city has been putting it in speed bumps and speed humps everywhere. And how come New York City can do this and we can't
The unfortunate thing is that the city has created a culture where running red lights is encouraged simply because it take an eternity for a red light to change. That also forces motorists to speed to the next light for fear it will turn red by the time they get there. Add to that the experts have decided that traffic signals should be placed beyond the intersection which only adds to motorists running red lights because they are so far beyond the intersection. The raised obstacles placed on Whalley have claimed two lives and the ones on Chapel create a tight squeeze should a vehicle and a bicycle be abreast going around one. Then there are the stop bars. Most motorists don't understand them and the importance of stopping in the right place to trip the light. Then we have bicyclists who don't like to stop for red lights. Then we have pedestrians trying to safely cross the street, hopefully at a crosswalk. Should we just give up? For me I avoid New Havenas much as possible because it's so difficult to navigate which is very sad and detrimental to small businesses. The good news is the lights can be fixed.
Matt H: If the lights were synchronized to turn green when cars approached traveling at the legal speed, then it would slow traffic. The way it works now does the opposite because we need to speed up to "make the light" because there is no logic as to when it will turn red and no telling how long it will take to turn green again. Interestingly, I know one section of downtown when the light is timed to encourage speeding because I can only make the light when I speed and when I don't speed I always get there too late.
