I live on this corner. There's been 10, maybe more accidents at this intersection since 2003. On top of that, there's many children in the neighborhood, and people fly up this road as fast as 75-80mph, fast enough that a few years ago they set up a speed trap. Was that not enough to show everyone there's a problem here? The neighborhood watch has complained about this for years, only to fall upon deaf ears. Sad.
no one has ever complained about the trees, and no, they do NOT block your view coming out of washington ave. The issue is that, going UP Culvert Street, the curve before Washington Ave is almost blind due to the house on the corner being as old as it is, and close to the street. You can't see traffic barreling up the road at breakneck speed like they so seem to enjoy. I've lived on this corner for 6 years, and not a single accident has been caused by nothing being able to see because of the trees, all of them have been because the driver couldn't see the people coming up the road from High St, usually well over the speed limit.
There's definitely been more of a police presence in the area lately, and that seems to have helped a bit. At the same time, this intersection is still too unsafe. People clip the corner coming down the hill, and end up on the wrong side of the road, going too fast, there's a few good skidmarks on culvert st from people trying to compensate. This is getting horrible, and eventually someone is going to get hurt. A stop sign will slow the traffic down quite a bit at this intersection that's normally teaming with children on nice days.
culvert & washington intersection.. I live right at that place. Poor visibility for cars pulling out on to culvert rd. Many close calls for pedestrians,animals,cars.. Need more opinions, then I will continue to write the mayor
That's SO much for everyone for BLOWING THIS WIDE OPEN and ruining ANY chances of us finally getting a sign. NO! SPEEDERS ARE NOT THE MAIN PROBLEM. It's been mentioned time and time again here on seeclickfix that the laws here say you can't put up a stopsign to slow traffic, but thanks to the uninformed making it on TV yesterday, we'll never have the potential accidents resolved. As the above poster showed, it's not speeding that's the issue, it's the blind corner that causes MANY MANY accidents for those trying to exit washington ave.
Your right the problem is the blind spot when you come from Washington Ave. Nobody is disagreeing with that. I believe the town should look in to it further. I am going to call Mayor Bingham and further discuss this problem with him!!!
the officer did mention a stop sign is against state law.. in that location . mayor contact sounds good there is always a loop hole in laws somehow.. maybe decrease speed through low speed limit signs and 2 speed bumps.. keep it up.. Its a dangerous place for everyone and for pets. paul
Paul; It's not at all illegal to put a stopsign there, it was the REASONING that wasn't legal. And yes, there are many loopholes for it either way. It's not legal in CT to place a stopsign solely to regulate traffic speed. I too, plan to contact city hall again, or maybe just stand outside with my camera and video some of the many almost-accidents that happen here EVERY DAY.
The issues it not the speeders up the road. It is/was the gate with the creeping foliage on it that was obstructing views down the street. Now that this has been removed, it's been a marked improvement.
I agree, though, that this issue needs to STAY resolved, and the home owner needs to be responsible for keeping this obstruction down.
The gate, so you claim, had ZERO to do with it, since the overgrowth WAS NOT ON THE SIDE THAT FACES THE CORNER. There never was, nor will be any fence growth on that side. The fact is simple. It's an old road, with a bad canter on the corner. You can not see around the large house on the way up or down. And it's quite difficult to see anyone pulling out of washington ave if you're going up culvert street.
Again, the foliage was *NEVER* on that side of the fence. It was on the far side, on washington ave, well before the corner. This was far from the cause of the issues.
