I am amazed that no one has been killed at this intersection. Some of the kids crossing don't even look & they can't hear the cars with their Ipods on. There must be a better solution.
This would be a great place for WCU's public safety officers to be posted before each class change to enforce the jay walking rules. The intersection has an "all walk" feature that turns all four directions of traffic signals red once per signal cycle. Unfortunately, there is frequenlty nobody left at the intersection to cross when the "all walk" phase occurs because whoever pressed the button has jaywalked, leaving motorists fuming in their wake.
We have gone to several meetings in the past 5 years with West Goshen township and the college for a left had turn lane on both Rosedale Ave and High St. and all they do is ignore your suggestions. As far as the Pedestrian Walk light goes (what do you expect from college kids). They should have never been allowed to build in the south eastern quadrant (West Goshen twp)
but West Goshen twp gave them and approved all the ordinances
that we fought against. This intersection is very bad even if cars are going north and south on High st. They speed through the intersection and there is very little room to wait on the sidewalk to cross. They are now making that intersection worse by expanding the building on the southeast corner(bull center) to make it a theatre for the performing arts. We have suggested them posting signs as you approach Rosedale ave intersection at High st. and a blinking light to warn cars - aproaching dangerous intersection - reduce speed to 20 mph but nothing has been done. The college is too busy expanding and building to make money and West Goshen doesn't care.
This problem has gotten worst now that the construction on the ramps is in progress. People have found the short cut around and now it is even more dangerous. As a resident in south east(not a student) I have learned to avoid this intersection at all cost. The pedestrians dont even yield to emergency vehicles, what makes you think they would let you turn!!!
I have the solution: This light should work like the corner of Route 30 & Ithan Ave for Villanova University. Pedistrians are able to cross (straight or diagnol)after, I think, the Route 30 traffic. They have sufficient time to get across. Then the Ithan Ave goes, then the Route 30, then pedestrians. This was a great system when I was a grad student there. And speaking as un andergrad of WCU - the student should be able to live with it. It may be a learning curve, but it will solve the problem.
It's worse than that - if a pedestrian waits for the walk light, she can get hit by a vehicle that ignores it. This happened to me years ago - somehow a car went over my foot without injuring me.
It's a college campus so A) Deal with it, B) this is not an issue you post here, C) You can not change what the student will think and/or do when they feel like so stom bellyaching! bunch of winny people on this site on tons of BULLS**T TOPICS
I hear ya! These students need an education but need to take a common sense course too! This problem will not go away, lay on the horn and tell them to get an education!
The crosswalks they've put on Rosedale have only made things worse. Students just stroll across the road talking on their cell phones not even looking, each sometimes 10 yards apart, backing up traffic heading thru there. Yes its a college but Rosedale Ave is not a sidewalk between dorms. They should remove the crosswalks and put somekind of bridge there if they want college kids to be able to casually stroll across without looking.
I am told that having an intersection with walk lights that go 'walk' simultaneously (a pattern first used in New York City about 50 years ago and called a 'Barnes Dance' after the traffic commissioner of the day) violates state standards, though I am of the opinion that it would be safer than walk lights that go with traffic if there was just some way of enforcing it. The bridge idea was apparently brought up years ago, but such a bridge would have to be handicap-accessible and the slow rise necessary to get the bridge above truck and bus height would demand a gigantic and incredibly expensive structure.
simple solution, hit them, Jaywalking is illegal and as long as you stop there is very little that will happen to you. the 'stop for pedestrians' is where there are not any pedestrian control devices. the same at gay and high.
