The water in the roadway is coming from a closed water gate in the street. The packing around the gate body is leaking slightly due to age. It will be removed and replaced next week as part of the culvert project.
The water is from the main and has not gone through any meters. The town produces about 900,000,000 gallons of water per year. About 5% is unaccounted for (leaking water) or about 4.5 million gallons per year. The DEP wants towns to be lower than 10% of unaccounted water in their system, so the few hundred gallons per day is a relatively insignificant loss.
That being said, we are pushing the gas co to relocate their pipe as quickly as possible so that we can get into Comm Ave to remove the gate.
Thanks for the question.
