Thank you for sharing your concern. The City is also concerned with this issue and is making it a priority to identify solutions. City staff has met with Duke Energy, the Clearwater Marine Aquarium and FWC to evaluate lighting issues and discuss potential remedies. It has been determined that the issues is unlikely to be fixed by re-angling and/or shielding the lights. Therefore, last month, the City requested further information regarding the compatibility of amber LEDs with the new lighting fixtures, details regarding the pricing of amber LEDs and information pertaining to DOT safety recommendations. This information should be available soon to present before the City Commission.

That was months and months ago that the subject came up - and now turtle season is fully underway. It's unfortunate it has taken this long. As for DOT safety recommendations, these are not major highways here, but rather the small community of Sunset Beach with its little streets. We've somehow managed to survive for years without being lit up enough to be able to read a book outside at night under these lights - literally. I hope these lights can be replaced soon. Thank you for your response.

There is also the issue of the lights at Sunset Chateau. Is the city planning on fining them?

This is how bright these lights are! Way too bright for any needs!

I want to add another street light that can be seen from ground level at the beach where hatchlings would see it and be disoriented as to the direction they should head in - the one on W. Gulf between 80th Ave. & Ter. I'm sure there are more -probably most along W.Gulf.

Was this ever resolved?

Thank you for your concerns regarding this matter. All streetlights in Sunset Beach and all others throughout the City west of Gulf Blvd. have been changed out to amber LEDs.

Thank you so much for getting these lights changed out - and the turtles thank you - well that is, the ones that can make it up on the beach this summer. How is it allowed for beach re-nourishment to take place during the height of turtle season? The beach is completely blocked to any turtles trying to make it up on the beach to lay their eggs.

The City has no say in the beach renourishment schedule as it is a county and state project. However, there are enhanced monitoring activities for shore birds and marine turtles during renourishment to relocate nests. Prior to renourishment, there were areas of our beach that were likely too eroded for turtle nesting. PB makes an excellent point about beach renourishment during turtle nesting season. Has TI gov't communicated with the county about this? To represent us?
