Description
Traffic approaching Derby Street on Lafayette must choose one of two lanes. The right lane is supposed to be Right Turn Only. The left lane is for traffic going straight ahead towards Front Street or turning left towards Washington Street. However, anyone who drives or walks here knows that people don't know what to do because there are no visible signs, and the arrows on the pavement are almost completely faded and too close to the intersection. Drivers need clearer markings and earlier warning as they pass the Wendy's at Peabody Street. This has become a problem because drivers planning to travel forward towards Front Street often occupy both lanes and end up in a dangerous confrontation in the middle of the intersection. Additionally, drivers wishing to turn right end up being stuck behind drivers who are waiting to travel forward, even though the right turn arrow is green. There is a lot of honking of horns and yelling of profanities by those who want to make the right-hand turn. The recent repairs in this area are amazing and we are very grateful for all of the work that has been done to improve this intersection and the road in the Washington Street / Hatches Wharf corridor. Drivers and pedestrians alike are already enjoying the benefits of these new improvements. Clearer lane markings and signage for this particular approach will really help, too. Thank you!
