There aren't any cars; that merge lane is created from the exit ramp. You're supposed to use that extra lane to get up to speed, as the anonymous reporter says, then move over into the travel lanes.

I am so happy that other people think that stopping there is stupid! There are no cars! It's all your lane, use it!

better judgement at least tells people to yield. and most merge ramps do have yield signs. so, basically youre one of those wreckless drivers who cause accidents just by being a jerk

I live in a residential neighborhood with a stop sign right outside my window.

stinkin' % come to a stop. Of that amount maybe half the 5% come to a COMPLETE stop! My street is a cut-thruogh to avoid a busy backed-up intersection,so my street becomes a sort of a by-pass.esp. at rush hours.Drivers blow through the stop signs with absolutely no fear of law enforcement,because of the residential status.
If the stop signs were removed it would actually cause or force drivers to at least slow down because they wouldn't know what to do!

I drive this route often and that lane is not long enough to get up to speed and merge into traffic where no one leaves enough room between driving due to tailgaiting. I understand what you mean and how it is supposed to work, but if we followed your direction we would not be driving safely.

I love how people think that they don't have to yield in a situation like that. It boggles my mind how idiotic some people are. My guess is that there USED TO BE a yield sign there, but an accident knocked it down and it was never replaced. Bottom line, you end up needing to change lanes, and whenever there is a lane change involved, there is an automatic YIELD and MERGE. If there is traffic coming, and you can't do it, you STOP. If it's clear, or sufficient room, feel free.

Oh, and one other thing that seems to escape people these days - putting your turn signal on to signal intent to change lanes does NOT give you the right of way to do so!

You can yield without stopping. I've take that route at least a thousand times. It is important to keep moving unless you see that you need to stop.

Agreed, except if you want to make the quick left from Baltimore Pike onto Turner Road you have to stop for oncoming traffic to get across into the left lane of Baltimore Pike. There isn't enough room from the end of the merge lane to Turner Road. It's just safer that way.
