The school zone signs on Six Forks and Rowan are intended to reduce the speed during the beginning and ending of Caroll Middle School’s bell schedule when there are students walking to and from the school. By nature, private schools are not compromised of students based on proximity therefore they often have little to no walkers. While Six Forks is a NCDOT maintained road, the City does maintain the school zone signs. We follow NCDOT's guidelines and do not provide school zone speed reductions for private schools, which is why the times only reflect Caroll Middle School’s bell times.

A lot of people do walk to St. Timothy's on North Brook and Rowan. Also, this policy doesn't seem consistent since the bell schedule for other private schools seem to be accounted for in other parts of town. Also, at the light at Northbrook and Six Forks, the "no turn on red" sign accounts for the St. Timothy's hours. It also seems like you wouldn't want people speeding through there during carpool time.

You are correct, there are other private schools where school zones have been added in the past, unfortunately we are not able to include the school times for St. Timothy’s school in the school zone for Carroll Middle School at this time because it does not reflect our current policy. However we are in the process of updating our school zone policy and would be happy to revisit this request after that policy is updated. The “no turn on red” sign times at Northbrook and Six Forks do not reflect the current traffic schedule ordinance and will be need to be updated. Thank you for your concern.
