Description

St. Paul & St. James offers laudable services to the local homeless population and many of us admire that. However, it is completely nonsensical for them to run these services out of a church in the middle of a residential neighborhood. Every day I see a mass exodus of homeless from downtown to Wooster Sq where they loiter outside the church. Recently many of these folks have occupied the now defunct/abandoned former "Joker's WIld" club where my neighbors and I have observed them shooting up heroin. As a temporary solution, we need a more frequent police presence at this location. In the long term, St Paul & St James should relocate their homeless services to another location. It is crazy to draw vagrants and drug addicts to a family neighborhood rather than going downtown to serve them directly.

I couldn't agree more. We are back to the problems we had in the 1980's. Let it be noted that the folks who were behind the Sunrise Café do NOT (in majority) live anywhere near here. In fact, most of them live in areas where there are no half-way houses, soup kitchens or shelters. Those are concentrated in and around Wooster Square.

You are part of the problem. Affluent neighbors of this local church must insist on housing the homeless before winter cold. If it wasn't for the Sunrise Cafe and other charities, your home would already have been vandalized and robbed. Homeless, hungry, ignored humans have nothing to lose. Like wild animals who have been deprived of habitat, these are men and women and children who have been deprived by a sick economy and a heartless one. Yale and the city have the means to house ALL of our sick addicted and homeless souls. REMEMBER WE are unpredictable and dangerous...so DO something...or expect all HELL

Jim, read what the poster wrote. They did not propose to end these services, but suggested that they be moved outside of a family neighborhood. It is unsafe to have drug addicts come to a residential neighborhood and then shoot up in abandoned buildings nearby. We should move these services closer to the populations in need.

@Fauchon , no , most operators/volunteers do come from dilapidated abandoned areas , a few do live in Buccolic nabes

@Jim, the homeless clients are clearly coming from downtown, the chapel street bridge has a constant stream going to and from the Green to the Church. Would be better to establish these services downtown and not right in the middle of the residential Wooster Sq neighborhood.

Many of the Sunrise clients stay at Grand Ave shelters nearby. Homeless folks come from all classes and all neighborhoods and even if they didn't, NO neighborhood or suburb is secure from rape, murder, home invasion, or robbery. Secluded homes are still at risk. Fences, gates, and walls can be climbed. Like the rest of us humans, people who are homeless for whatever reason do NOT want to live in a wasteland like Columbus House in the middle of an ugly nowhere and miles from the center of town. Would you??? Wooster Sq. area includes an atrocious project called Farnam Courts and shelters for old and young men. Moving Cafe Sunrise wont make a difference, period.

Oh you think the Sunrise Café is a church mission. It is an economic deal. The café pays rent that the church needs to stay open.

I say open another Sunrise Cafe in Wooster Square. If everyone is already coming there for services, it would help to service more people and that could increase the foot traffic into this dangerous neighborhood. Maybe offer other services that help people and make them feel more welcome in the neighborhood. Many of these people served their country and their presence in the neighborhood could have a positive influence on the younger generation. Instead of telling them to go away, the residents should be opening up their hearts and allowing their kids to listen to their stories. This would help to keep these people in the Wooster Square neighborhood and solve the need for the daily mass exodus from other areas.

PETA member is trolling, like your average PETA adherent. Wooster Sq between Grand and Water street is one of the safest areas of the city and a family neighborhood. We don't need addicts streaming in to shoot up in vacant buildings. If you want to drive out all the working professionals from the city and their tax dollars, listen to fools like this. We can't help anyone, let alone the homeless, if the city is broke.

Young people growing up in East Rock and Westville (not to mention those in Branford, Guilford, Madison, and other shoreline communities) are severely deprived of opportunities for meaningful engagement with individuals victimized by substance abuse, poverty and other scourges of modern American life. Shouldn't we make an effort to share this important human resource more broadly? Surely opening shelters and community-supported diining facilities in more areas, with transportation provided (especially in bad weather) would lead to an even better sharing of stories and positive influence.

Fauchon, you are so right. I think we need to start our own charity to open up a sunrise cafe and shelter in downtown Guilford. These kids are seriously missing out on the wonderful experience of witnessing vagrants inject heroin needles into their arms and then walk around like zombies. This is truly formative and I will donate every spare dollar I can muster to this cause.

You don't inject the needles into your arm! Most of the people in Guilford are zombies. Could we just bus these kids that you think are missing out, into New Haven. They could write a report, and Yale would print it for some type of grant. Yale needs the grant money$$$$$$$$$$. They don't want to touch there nest egg!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I get it, your president won and now you want to make "them" go away. The echo in this chamber is too much to bear. I live in the neighborhood with my cats. Something must be done to help the homeless in Wooster and the rest of New Haven. Bussing them away to other towns isn't the answer. Shutting them out of the Wooster sq area doesn't solve the problem. We need to open our hearts and minds to their plight and think about their feelings. Lift them and their pets out of homelessness and maybe they'll become tax payers like you. Like the guy in that will smith movie. We need to have a prayer breakfast in the square as soon as possible so we can come together and heal and tell the world we're behind these people 110%.
