I totally agree! The lakeside sidewalk and the bike path should be open! These events should be inside the two paths so that the tax payers and tourists can access one of the best parts of Burlington.
The City's Parks, Recreation & Waterfront, Police and Fire Departments work with companies bringing events to the Waterfront to help produce high quality and safe events for our community. Obviously, private ticketed events serving food and alcohol and showcasing multiple performances are the most complicated. The City's policy is to keep the bike path open as much as possible and to limit any closures if they're necessary. Providing a safe environment for all event attendees, path users, and the general public is held paramount and always the deciding factor in implementing the full closure. We recognize there are people that disagree with this policy and we will looking to improve our communication of these events and further minimizing their impact in the months ahead.
Maybe close 1 path and not both? I was instructed by event security this summer to take my cargo bike with my 3 year old on the back up the handicapped ramp or up the stairs to go around the closed paths. I very nearly didn't make it up the ramp because it was so tight. Going around was not an option as I had to pick my older children up from camp at the skate park. On the way back south I had to ride with all 3 of my children on a very unsafe road full of potholes and distracted drivers looking for a place to park. Moving fences in a few feet would solve this issue.
When this was voted on and passed it was not billed as a path that would be open "as much as possible" to the public. It was meant to be a way to have both public access to the park and private events. I would like to see the original language of the vote. This feels very much like a bait and switch. Additionally, sending throngs of people onto Lake Street where there are people walking, biking, driving on the road with poor surface and infrastructure is a ludicrous example of "providing a safe environment for all attendees, path users, and general public..."
It seems like perhaps rather than letting parked vehicles obstruct the path they could park at any of the nearby lots freeing up enough space to erect the fencing along the reinforced area?
BPRW has worked hard with our citizen event advisory group to develop a bike path closure policy. It will be available shortly on our website https://enjoyburlington.com/
Thank you for addressing this issue! I’m having trouble finding the information at that link, could you explain where to find this on the page? Thanks!
Please also post a link to the minutes of the meeting(s) of the "citizen event advisory group" which has developed our bike path closure policy. Thanks!
I've been looking for the minutes of Advisory Event Selection Committee Meeting of
December 4, 2016 (sic). Please provide a link so that we may read the discussion of the issues considered leading to this new policy. Thanks!
This policy was not created through an advisory committee, rather through BPRW staff in reflection of discussions that occurred in the Waterfront Event Advisory Committee. We will allow comments or considerations regarding feedback of this policy continuously by the public and others. Questions or additional comments can be directed towards BPRW Director Cindi Wight, cwight@burlingtonvt.gov
