They certainly do make a lot of noise. I will admit it must be hard to lift heavy objects and keep the trucks moving as fast as they can but I always get woken up.

Why does garbage pickup have to be in the middle of the night? I lived in LA (2nd largest city in the country, and much more congested than JC), and didn't have to put up with this nonsense. It creates a poor quality of life.

@Patty- That I have yet to see but I bet it would be quite entertaining to watch.
@Jonny86 - I'm 100% with you on this one. As a transplant from East village NYC ( lived there for about 8 years) I'll give it to them for how efficient they are. Although they are loud, they are off your streets within minutes. In JC, the garbage collectors seem to dwell and marinate on each street. There are times i'm behind one in the evening on one way streets ie. 2nd street, 3rd street, 4th street, etc and just wait for ages until they pass.

I am a resident of 10th street, I'm raising the same issue concerning the late and loud trash pick up.
It use to be done around 11pm on Thursdays which to me, was acceptable, but lately it's been between 1am and 3am. It surely wakes the whole neighbourhood for a while. A few nights ago, the truck drove by 3 times within an hour...
Could you please provide the residents with an update of what is being done to avoid this issue?

Just want to add my voice to the chorus. I have the misfortune of having my bedroom window face the street. After-hours trash collection is the #1 quality-of-life issue I have with Jersey City right now. It sucks, period. I can second that it's often way later than 10:30 (which is obnoxious to begin with), and wakes me up every time no mater what I do. It's illegal to operate noisy heavy machinery after hours in a residential neighborhood for a damn reason.

Talk to other cities and figure out how they do it, it's that simple. You should not have to make your citizens miserable and physically ill in the name of avoiding the mild inconvenience of a few motorists during normal daylight hours.

I also recall a night that the truck slowly backed up down the whole block in the middle of the night, BEEEEP-BEEEP-BEEEEP-BEEEEP-BEEEP-BEEEEP-BEEEEEP...

I'd hate to jinx this issue but is it me or has the garbage trucks and personnel really toned it down this past week? I will confirm this evening after they pass my place tonight.

As per Rich in dispatch office, as per the contract with Jersey City, the company must collect trash between the hours of 7pm - 6am. Further noise complaints should be forwarded to city hall.

Who should be contacted in city hall about this? I thought this was a forum for resident issues; if we need to contact city hall, that's fine, but a contact person or department should be identified.

I agree with Jonny86, please provide the Public Works point of contact or whoever made the 'BRIGHT" decision for our city to collect trash to coincide with when 90% of the population is sleeping. I mean 7pm-12am or even 1am is pushing it already but to 6am??

Sanitation Jenny, it’s not a satisfactory answer to say that the trash collectors are performing according to their contract. Come on.

The city contracted this company, Regional Industries, and their contract is to collect rash from 7pm to 6am. If you feel that this is unsatisfactory contact city hall. Or you can call JC DPW at 201-547-4400. Thank you.
