Heavy truck traffic is not permitted to use Baker Street as a through street. Baker street is a residential street. I agree that speeding cars are also an issue, especially when pedestrians can barely cross without being struck as a literally just witnessed by IGA. FYI, there was no bus.
maybe the PD should stop a few trucks an check their logs to see if they are delivering to a residence or just cutting through. Miller cuts through town ALWAYS on baker but the local PD doesn;t seem to give a ,,,,, Oh I forgot! The saftey officer probaly would complain about impeding traffic by stopping a truck!!
It's one thing to get lost. It's another to see the same trucks all the time. I second that truck traffic is ridiculously heavy on Baker, particularly at the intersection with 8th (as shown in many of the images). My wife was nearly killed at this intersection by a semi travelling too fast and unable to stop for a red light. The proximity to a busy school also worries me enormously.
don't truck drivers take a test and know a sign with the picture of a truck with a line through it means NO TRUCKS! Must be a lot of blind drivers working for Miller

Sarcasm isn't helping anyone. Leave it on facebook. This is a tool the city is using to respond to complaints and suggestions by citizens. Please don't ruin that that. I'd like to acknowledge what the city has done with the increased signage on 54, Baker, and in the roudabout. I have noticed a clear decrease in truck traffic since, but not in an entirely meaningful way. It helped but by no means fixed it and there needs to be further action by the city to help us and the students that go to Howe.
None of the people complaining have ever driven a truck let alone have any idea what it's like .
9 times out of 10 either GPS or the person the called for delivery directions routes trucks that way and since they don't know the area they follow the directions they have.
Trucks are also allowed to make local deliveries irregardless of the no trucks sign.
The FedEx and UPStruck that go by my house rattle the windows more than the occasional list tractor trailer truck.
Easy fix to all truck traffic, close the mill, bars, grocery stores, restaurants and any other business that has trucks making deliveries or picking if their product.
When did Rapids get so full of whining people, my neighbors grass is a 1/4 inch higher than mine, they parked their car with one wheel on the grass, there's a piece of garbage on their lawn, my neighbor snores and it keeps me awake.
People need to grow up and realize it's not a perfect world and you probably @#$% people off as well except they don't hide in here behind some annomous/fictitious name boohooing about everything!!
Let's not rid the city of the dope dealers or catch people running 10 over the speed limits or driving like idiots because they can't read a clock and leave 5 minutes sooner.
It's turned into a me me me society, God have Mercy on us all!!!
What would people think about turning 8th and baker and 16th and baker into a complete 4 way stop. No yield sign, no lights. This would assist in keeping the area safe for pedestrians, and slow down a lot of speeders. Speeders may then decide to take the expressway to get to the other side of town, which would reduce the overall traffic volume.
Thank you for bringing this issue to our attention. An officer will be looking into the issue. If we need further information we will contact you via email by posting on your SeeClickFix issue.
If any one has suggestions to help the city, I'm sure they would appreciate it. Attempting to insult and shame each other and them accomplishes nothing. Kpatt I like the idea of the four way stop but I'm thinking there would be a ton of backup. There's already often 100 yards of traffic backup on Baker and 8th due to the school and commuters in the morning.
I didn't think the no trucks signage alone would have had the impact it has, but it proves many drivers were getting lost. I know this part of Rapids is notoriously difficult to navigate for truckers.
I think something that would help is functionally narrowing the road. I know we lost the grass boulevard west of 8th street, so the street seems very wide like it should be a truck route and that the speed limit should be higher. And I think the bike routes are a big waste. I RARELY see bikes on those lanes, and I myself use a back road, since there is such a high volume of traffic, even ignoring the heavy vehicles. I know us homeowners need the parking and an unused and frankly dangerous bike lane seems like a big waste. If there were cars parked on the sides, not only would it make the homeowners happy, but big trucks would be less inclined to take the route and traffic would probably move much much slower and safer (for the children of course).
So I have been making suggestions and offering suggestions to numerous city employees and my alderman, Steve Koth, for the past 3 years. I have owned my home for 7 years and what happened 3 years ago just really made me want to push the issue. I was crossing baker (heading north) at 16th street with my 2 year old son in a bright orange stroller. Nearest vehicle was by the entrance to IGA. They were speeding and nearly struck my son in his stroller. They had their window open and I couldn't make out what they said. I was visibly shaken up and they just kept on going after nearly killing my son. I still have the email I sent from that night as it is more detailed. This incident got me to look into the issues around baker street and made me realize the city has an obligation to do something about the semi traffic and the speeders. If they can't resolve the issue via police enforcement, they need to change the layout of the street. From my constant pestering over the last 3 years we have gotten 2 things: signs and "narrower" lanes after restriping the road. Ultimately, I would love for baker to no longer be used as a through street for people heading from one side of town to the other, that's what the expressway is for. If you want to go 40, don't do it on baker, take the expressway. People don't understand they are putting others lives at risk when they constantly go speeding down a residential area. I really appreciate your feedback.
