All of last night and today there has been a city police cruiser parked next to the statue to Columbus, ostensibly to prevent vandalism on the eve of Columbus Day. How many taxpayer dollars were wasted in this pointless endeavor? For a city that prides itself on its role in freeing the Amistad slaves, it is rich there is such concern for a man who lead a genocidal mission that raped and pillaged the indigenous peoples of Hispaniola and enslaved them to mine gold, resulting in 250,000 deaths.

Regardless of feelings on the statue, Wooster Square residents shouldn't have to deal with vandalism in the neighborhood. There are more productive means of protest that don't blight neighborhoods or waste taxpayer dollars in cleanup.
