The RWA sincerely apologizes for the discoloration event last evening and appreciates your patience while we assess if flushing in certain neighborhoods is required today. In anticipation of an inspection of one of our filter plant pipes, we filled all tanks in our distribution system on Monday afternoon, and the increased flow stirred up naturally occurring sediment in the pipes causing discoloration in parts of our New Haven distribution system. For more information about discolored water, see https://www.rwater.com/water-quality/discolored-water. Please contact us at (203) 562-4020 if your water appears discolored this morning. If you washed laundry last evening before noticing the color of the water, please contact us to obtain a product to remove any color from your laundry.
The mains in the Lincoln-Trumbull-Orange Street area were never relined as they were in the Upper East Rock area 20+ years ago. I used to get a condition you describe in the toilet bowl and rust in the laundry all the time. I was told then years ago that it must be in my pipes inside the house—they were and are all copper. I put in a whole house water filter with a 5 micron filter which I change about every three months. If there were flushing of the system it shows up in the filter and actually can get filled with dark red-brown sediment. If you think you may or may not need a filter: what's in your toilet tank?
