I read through this Neighborhood Traffic Calming Program thing and I have to say what a crock it is. I'm not sure the taxpayers should be paying to implement these measures when there are already measures in place to take care of these issues. What we need is for the police to more consistently enforce the traffic laws that are already exist. We also need better education for drivers throughout their driving life, not just at the very beginning.

Besides, most of these "solutions" will require maintenance by the city on an ongoing basis. Curbs from bumpouts will need to be replaced and repainted every year when plow drivers destroy them. Any kind of traffic control barrel/cone/piling will need to be replaced when a careless driver smashes into it anyway or else they will end up looking like the the other barrels around town that just sit dilapidated and crushed in travel lanes of intersections. And when someone submitted a SeeClickFIx report asking to have the bike lanes repainted after some road work was done, the city responded that that they do not own the stencil to do that work and they refused to rehire the contractor that did own it so the issue was closed and never completed. You expect this city will maintain art murals in intersections or forced perspective crosswalks? They can't even maintain the current inventory of crosswalks they have.

I urge all residents of Salem to voice your opinion at this upcoming Ward 4 meeting and tell the city to do better with what it already has and stop these ridiculous measures they are implementing for the sole reason of justifying their positions.
