Description

This intersection is a pedestrian danger. Columbus is a one-way street with timed lights most of the way, encouraging drivers to maintain one speed. But this particular intersection is not timed with the ones farther south. Thus drivers regularly run the red light to "stay with the pack" and get further green lights at 59th St and south. So pedestrians get a walk signal to cross Columbus and cars are still in the intersection. This could be remedied by aligning the light timing so that drivers don't try to beat the light.
