Last Friday, the City performed a repair to the filter plant at our well located in Silverwood Park. As required by the Minnesota Department of Health, the normal chlorine level that is normally added to the water was increased it insure disinfection. This is the cause for the strong chlorine smell.
Despite the odor, the water was tested throughout the system and is safe to drink and use as you normally would.
Having stated that, due to the number of calls regarding the odor, staff began flushing many watermains on Saturday and continuing into Sunday. This resulted in the discoloration of the water, similar to when we flush watermains in the spring and fall. This should clear up within a day.
We recommend opening one of the faucets in the upper part of the home, and letting the water run for approximately 5 minutes, or until you are sure that you are drawing fresh water from the watermain in the street.
Similar to when watermains are flushed in the spring and fall, it will likely take approximately one day for the water to become clear.
We apologize for the alarm or inconvenience that this caused.
