City code gives property owners and renters 24 hours after the END of the snow, winter weather, event to clean and salt/sand sidewalks. These properties will be inspected on Friday morning for sidewalk clearing. Thank you
Lorie, the city just sent out a newsletter which highlighted the ordinance above all others. It’s not the $ amount of the fine, but the lack of enforcement. The same exists for speed limits and weight restrictions...as they are not enforced, they are regarded as mere suggestions.
Thank you for the comments. While we try to enforce code evenly across the city, the fact is there is a lot of area to cover and it is difficult at best be everywhere. We encourage everyone to use SeeClickFix as it allows us to respond to specific areas of concern rather than try to drive around and hope to see all the problem areas. I do try to inspect high traffic areas after snow and ice events to try and keep compliance up. Letters left at the residences and sent to land owners explain what happens with non-compliant properties. Thank you again for your posts and please keep notifying us about problem areas.
Hello! My name is Kate Hilton. I am the property owner at 1010 Lincoln street. If you would like a status update I welcome you to stop by and introduce yourself instead of bothering Ray. I am sure you and I could have a very productive conversation. I am off work Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Now, I know you have chosen to remain anonymous. I can only assume that is because you are either horribly disfigured or a coward. Either way you have my sincerest condolences on your sad plight. Hopefully one day you will be brave enough to share your real name so we all know who this perfect pillar of society is. Best of luck to you and have a wonderful Christmas.
Kate,
As a property owner, you received the city newsletter which clearly stated the ordinance. You also share a common responsibility with all city residents in doing our best to make this a better, safer environment for everyone. The city, in declaring this an ordinance, has the obligation (and by necessity) the authority to enforce. When reporting is sought by the city and thereby rendered, I’m quite certain there is no “bother”. Anonymity ensures that all, no matter station, race, ethnicity, etc., should stand in place of civic duty. This is a duty, as well as a right and privilege that I share with many others who want our city to be better.
I’m sorry you don’t.
As I stated feel free to come by and introduce yourself if you want to discuss this further. I look forward to meeting you so we can discuss what exactly civic duty entails!
looking at the list of sidewalks in need of a shovel I don't get the enforcement issue?? It's like the cop that pulls you over for speeding and you say " what about the others that were speeding?" And his answer is, " when you go fishing you can't catch all the fish" As far as posting Anonymously, peopl usually think that person must have something to hide.. how's your sidewalks?
My weekend on, but I’ll add one last thing. Kate, we will not be meeting as further discourse would be futile. I suggest that the next time your mail carrier delivers to your house, you stand in your warm, dry doorway and give them the finger while they trudge through the snow. And how about the same sentiment for the kids going back and forth from school. Oh, and let’s not forget the elderly, or those delirious parents pushing strollers... You’ve already invested more time arguing the point of the ordinance than it would take to abide it.
And Lorie, comments are just as “anonymous” as only a user name is required. Enforcement is what maintains law and rule. Without it, everyone would either have to subscribe to arbitrary will or chaos. Ordinances, decrees and laws are the fabric of society and while some have to be forcefully executed-by way too few-it is widely held that their existence is enough. Personal sovereignty does not place one above the rights of others nor the rule of law.
As I live in city and travel these streets frequently, I will continue to report code and ordinance violations as I see them. I will not argue the points and if those feel somehow “violated”, I suggest they simply comply. We should all be in this together-but then there would be no need for courts, arbiters, fines or prisons where those who seek to enforce their will over the will and rights of others most often find themselves. It’s your choice as to which path you will follow.
As I suspected your are not horribly disfigured. As the city noted in these comments this issue was reported less than 24 hours after the snowfall ended. As I have 24 hours after the end of the snow fall I will continue to comply with that ordinance. I will also continue to address any incorrectly reported violations about my property.
