The traffic lights in the morning heading west on West Chester Pike at Lawrence Road, Ellis and further east are poorly timed, especially in the morning.
YES, YES, YES! This is one of the most important ones that I have seen. Traffic backs up all the way to Manoa Shoping Center from 7-9 am. The problem has gotten worse lately. Here is what is needed:
1. Retime the lights at Lawrence Road
2. Adjust the lanes on Route 3 west so that the right lane is for north 476 only, and the middle and left lanes are for route 3 westbound only. As it is now, the right lane is for 476 north and westbound 3, the middle lane is for Route 3, and the left lane is for turning left onto Lawnrence road. Hardly anyone turns left but everyone uses the right lane.
3. Perhaps consider adding a second lane on the superwide shoulder for northbound 476?
But, will Haverford Twp and Penn Dot do anything to help us? Don't bet on it.
Doubly painful for drivers wanting to turn left on lawrence! Have to wait for all the cars in the left lanes to make their way to the right to either go WB on 3 or N on blue route. Everyone waits til last minute to get over to avoid congestion on the right. I can get stuck behind 1 or 2 cars trying to change lanes while watching the light for Lawrence cycle several times before I can get through (and the L turn lanes are clear except for the late mergers gumming up the works). The whole quarter mile needs redesign - earlier signs, lane markers - and more policing!
the biggest problem is that the metered lights are now turned on . . . which they shouldn't be at this 476 interchange because there is no need to merge when going north. WE GET OUR OWN LANE so there should be no back up on the on ramp!!!!!
Well, I'll add my 2 cents. I have been taking WC Pike from Drexel Hill to N Blue Route for over 8 years and this problem has been ongoing. Something has to be done. Between 7 and 9 am traffic baked up starting at the Dunkin Donuts going W bound. It easily adds up to 20 minutes to an already long commute. And if you try to take Lawrence Road from Eagle, it could take just as long, the only difference being that people are not driving on the shoulder of the road like they do on WC Pike. Coming home is just the opposite. Backed up from the Blue Rout exit ramp, up to Eagle Road.
The Delco Times reported that a very serious car vs. bike accident occurred this morning at the intersection. I bet that accident somewhere, somehow is related to the bad flow of traffic through this intersection. My prayers go to the family of the victim. I wish Penn Dot would do more to improve traffic flow.
I agree! This morning I was stuck for 10 minutes just to get from Glen Gary to Lawrence Road. The light for westbound West Chester Pike lasts for only 20 seconds, while the light for east bound was 35 seconds. Something has to be done to ease the flow of traffic. I understand the increase in vehicles on the road during the morning rush, but something has to be done.
