Unfortunately, because the noise is coming from a house, it is considered private property. We suggest approaching the owner of the house and asking them to make a repair.

I'm sorry, complaints about noise coming from private property are a real thing, and the city has a section of it's noise ordinance dedicated specifically to address noise coming from residential property. Below is a cut and paste directly from the city's web site. Is it possible to revise that explanation?

.5 NIGHT TIME NOISE DISTURBING THE PEACE AT RESIDENTIAL PROPERTIES .1 For purposes of this section, between the hours of 11 p.m. and 7 a.m., excessive noise shall include, but not be limited to, noise clearly audible from the nearest dwelling unit which results from any of the following sources:

.1 the operation of a radio, phonograph or related electronic devices;

.2 the playing of musical instruments;

.3 the use of any device designed to amplify sound; .4 singing, shouting or loud speech by a person or group of persons.

.2 No person owning or controlling residential property in the city shall permit the inhabitants or occupants to disturb the peace of others through the creation of excessive noise. The police shall instruct persons creating a disturbance to cease and desist and shall take note of the time and place of such disturbance has occurred.

From what you stated earlier it does not seem like the noise is in excess of 50 dBA. This is how loud the noise would have to be in order for the house to be in violation of the city’s ordinance. It is stated in the City Ordinance of 2017, Under section 7.9 Noise Abatement; Disturbing the Peace, it is the first description under “Excessive Noise Defined.” If you would like to review this issue further you will have to contact the Board of Health Department their contact information is (781)397-7049.

I don't have a device that measures decibels. I have no idea what 50 dBA sounds like. I just wanted to file a noise complaint without making any false claims, and without directly invoking the noise ordinance because I don't want to risk my neighbor being fined. I can hear the vent at night from the opposite end of my apartment, through the walls, with all the doors and windows closed.

Also, what is the appropriate extension at the Board of Health for dealing with noise complaints?

The vent makes noise when it's on. I think that's normal. The buzzing sounds more like an electrical transformer, but I only associated it with the vent because I never noticed the sound until the vent was put in and from outside the house, that's the general area where it's coming from.

Thank you. The buzzing was so loud earlier in the week either the owners noticed fixed it themselves or whatever electronic device stopped working. I'm just going to close this ticket because even if the noise comes back, SeeClickFix isn't the right place for a solution.
