Hey there CT Livable Streets... Didn't know you existed. Personally, I would love to see some traffic calming structures put in place on my street, although I'm afraid to lose any trees that shelter our home and yard.

I'd like the town/state to remove the double yellow lines from my street for starters, because it makes it appear to be a major throughway rather than a rural route and I think - though there may not be data to support this - that it makes people feel comfortable speeding. Any thoughts?

i know the cops said they would increase patrols...but to be honest - I only noticed that a couple afternoons...in the daylight hours....the speeders happen at night and when cops aren't in plain view...they need to hide....and watch/wait

Hi Robin... speed tables work. They are in use near the MicroSociety Magnet School in Hartford and have slowed traffic there. I think they go for between $1,500 and $2,000 each but I could be wrong about that. They set them up at crosswalks or at intervals between blocks.

I agree with you though that the speeders are worse at night. It's ridiculous.

To give the police some credit, if you have seen them ticketing then that is at least something to show for your effort here. Hopefully they'll continue to help you out.

A lot of folks responded after the story last week. I'm also working on a third piece about West Hartford's traffic calming efforts, which they say are getting results.

Speed tables would be excellent here, Robin.

How do you get one on your street? Send this issue along to your neighbors. The issues with the most "votes to fix" tend to attract more attention as they show up at the top of the search rankings.

Get more reporters like Doug to cover this! Maybe there are other local papers, or even the Hartford Courant, that would write a story on your quest to make the street a livable place.

You might also consider forwarding this to the Central CT Bicycle Alliance - they deal with these issues all the time and may have some good recommendations. There is an email contact address on their website.
