The trash is hard to contol when citizens do not have enough respect to throw the trash in a trash container or carry it to their own trash bucket. The trash issue has been the biggest shock moving to downtown holyoke. Signs are in all the parks and trash containers are on every corner and yet no one can dispose trash properly. I have seen trash thrown from cars. Those citizens that discard trash on the ground really do not love their city and that is sad..

I know the citizens need to take action and stop littering. But maybe if they fine the owner of convenience store for not keep there area clean and maybe if the city put more trash can around the area that might help.

You are right, ticket the owner, I guess, also ticket the citizens when they drop garbage, maybe a city wide campaign on litter.
The city does not have enough personnel to do this. , nor police to ticket a citizen throwing garbage.
Police walking in the neighborhoods and show their presence could help, but not enough personnel to do that, so it is left up to us to encourage citizens to be aware of their behavior. But where do you start!

A committee of volunteers specific to this issue is what is needed! I am ready and willing! When do we start? 😀

We continue to make an effort to keep the city clean, (ie: roving litter vac, parks dept, sheriffs dept detail). Winter makes it difficult; litter is frozen , or when the snow melts it all comes appears at once. We will continue.

I think you guys do a really good job. Its our fellow citizens that making a difficult job more difficult.

That is a good idea and we can involve the community and clean sectors . I am in. We need more trash cans around the city. Also need to enforce fine to owners of the buildings and businesses if they don’t maintain the area clean. We need to do something . Also pet owner they are not cleaning after their pets.

I definitely agree the issue starts with residents being more responsible, but I think placing additional trash/recycling bins around the city would go a long way in helping the issue. (Honestly I can readily think of very few locations these exist) Obviously that leads to more funding needed for the additional pickup/removal, but if we are going to seriously address the issue, it’s what is needed.
