Description

This is a very deep and new pothole (I am familiar with many other Thornhill "favorites"). I hit it with my drivers side front tire and it blew out the sidewall (less than 8,000 miles on my tired and no previous damage). Almost $300 to replace the tire. Please don't let this happen to others.

This pothole is in a critical location as anyone turning onto Thornhill from the freeway or from Moraga Blvd will encounter the pothole -- you can't swerve to the left because you risk going into oncoming traffic. There are frequently cars parked on the right. Pothole is located on the right side of the street as you are traveling N/NE.

Unfortunately the City does not have enough funding to repave all streets in poor condition. With limited funding, our response to resurfacing requests is limited to minor pavement and pothole repairs only. Our Street Maintenance Department will assess your street and determine whether temporary measures might be appropriate. Please understand that this work may be limited to pothole or other minor repairs, and that we have many similar requests. We will do our best to respond in a timely manner. The backlog of streets in Oakland needing pavement currently is $435 million and growing.

This is not just another pothole in a residential street but a pothole off two highway 13 off ramps ( Thornhill Blvd and Mountain Blvd.) which are heavily traveled every day. This is a street which is a main artery to and from the Montclair community. Not repairing this pothole is dangerous to motorists, bicyclists and pedestrians.

Interesting response from the city call center. Measure kk raised $600M to supplement the street paving budget yet they indicate insufficient funds. According to the cities web site there are only tree stretches of roads in the hills to be repaved (Shepard Canyon at the top; Mountain north of Thornhill; Tunnel Road near Caldicott lane). Other than a few bike lanes to dress up the resume of the head of OAKDOT, where is this money going?

Given the location of this pothole, it will get much bigger very fast. Once it is much larger, it will be much more expensive to repair. If the city really wants to save money, it will repair this pothole immediately.

When Libby Schaaf appointed Ryan Russo to head OAKDOT, she said that we should expect a transformation with the *new* transportation agency. My expectation was that the new agency with the increased funding would lead to a 2-3 day turn around of higher priority potholes -- but it has been a week. Oakland Call Center: what is a reasonable expectation for the patching of these (now) two deep potholes on Thornhill?
