It has been my understanding that we are all neighbors and clear away the fire hydrants in front of our houses. That section between the sidewalk and curb is under our responsibility.
Technically, ANYTHING between the sidewalk and the curb is " city property". I would know. The city made me take down Christmas lights because they were in the trees between the sidewalk and curb. I was told its city property. Since its city property, DPW needs to get out there and clear the snow off them! That's what our taxes pay for!
I notice there was no reply from Fire Chief Hoeft. I notice our fire hydrant is covered on Canterbury, and I'm not in the best shape at 79 to dig it out. I believe there should be a comment from the city about this city wide problem.
So you are saying even though the Dr has told me to take it easy with snow removal, I should go three homes down and shovel the snow from the hydrant. WOW Thanks for the neighborly advice.
Did you read the article sellers???? NOT everyone can shovel around a hydrant! Yes, lets be neighborly and have some heart attacks while doing it! Here is what the article said copied(even says to call the FD) :Michigan Fire Marshal Richard Miller has urged local fire departments to assess and ensure accessibility to all fire hydrants and to urge communities to take responsibility for keeping snow away from hydrants.
Chief Hoeft is asking residents to shovel out and around hydrants. Residents who live near a snowed-in hydrant and who can't remove the snow can report it using thecity's See Click Fix app. According to Hoeft, once alerted, firefighters will be by to clear snow. Residents can also leave a message by phone at (734) 429-4440.
Hey Sellers, NOT everyone can remove the snow. Do you want people dropping dead of heart attacks?? Did you read the article that you posted the link for? It even says to use the clickfix or call the FD and THEY will do it!!
Sec. 74-240. - Depositing restricted.
No person shall deposit or cause to be deposited any snow and ice on or against a fire hydrant or on any sidewalk, roadway or loading and unloading areas of a public transportation system, except that snow and ice may be windrowed on public roadways incident to the cleaning thereof or windrowed on curbs incident to the cleaning of sidewalks in business districts.
(Code 1968, § 16-145; Ord. No. 375, § 5, 4-4-83)
However, the article posted by Sellers from the Saline Area Fire Department does state that any reports on seeclickfix of blocked hydrants will be addressed by the city. This is from 2014, can we get an update as this may not still be the case?

I believe the answer to the questions was answered several years ago when we had several inches of snow pile up. You may be able to reference your answer here: http://salinefire.com/safety-tips/keep-fire-hydrants-clear-snow

In short, let's all be neighborly and make sure our hydrants are locatable for our own welfare.
