Description
An abandoned house owned by an out of state mortgage company is in disrepair and overcome by weeds to the extend that it looks like a jungle. There are broken down fences and an abandoned pool which is a real safety issue. I have reported this and nothing has changed.

Just to clarify, there is no water in the pool at 204 W. Chestnut, as confirmed by both the fire department and me when the complaint was originally made. There is water present in a similar above-ground pool at nearby 30 New Street (another foreclosed house). The fire department has pledged to get that pool drained ASAP. I understand -- and share -- your frustration about 204 W. Chestnut, JS (I live on the street, too), and we are trying to find the mortgage holder and a solution. In years past, the DPW "Task Force" usually handled situations like this, but that unit no longer really exists, due to the extensive personnel reductions at DPW.
One potential solution that I am pursuing: deployment of YouthBuild or other teams to tend yards at foreclosed houses, with the bill for their services going to the mortgage companies that hold deed.
Other suggestions? Please share; I'm eager to hear them!

I think that is an excellent idea.

Could somebody please post a picture of the place? So we can see what kind of problem we are up against? While the stuff winds through the legal process, can it be made a little less of a problem?

The weeds are growing. Paper and trash lay on the porch. It is an eyesore to the neighborhood. Winter is coming, and nobody has been here to check on the inside of the home. Will the pipes burst and further destroy a once beautiful home?

2) Pick up the litter that might be accumulating
It is well and good to point out the problem, and if you are doing stuff to help, thank you...
Lots of people are helping in their neighborhoods, but there's no "seeclickthanks" which is a pity.
Well, there is Neighborhood watch...

Meantime, it's ours to deal with.
This has been viewed 96 times, and more than that by the people that actually see it.
Take control of your neighborhood, clean it up, post the results of your good work, set an example of how it's done.

Some bleach in the pool might be about all you can do.
Properties are all depressed: you can get a 3 story operating building and store front on Broadway for arou 150K, a smaller one in need of some repair uptown for about 70K, ridiculously low prices (with huge huge taxes) but they are business properties and their price tells you what kind of return on investment is anticipated on those properties: very very small.
Anyone that has to sell into this market i going to hurt, and as values will not increase for 5 years or more, it's not even a great "deal".
Out best investment is to ourselves, our neighbors and neighborhoods: make sure whatever the price, it's a really really nice place to live. That might be all we can do, but it's probably, all in all, the best anyone can do, good times or bad.
Thank you for the work you have already done.

No matter: sorry for that extra burden that deteriorating house puts on you. Stuff never seems to end.

I am not sure where you are goimg with this, but I cannot go on someone else's deck and remove property that does not belong to me. I am, however, picking up the old phone books and papers on the front porch.

Here we go again.
First, give us an exact address and a Section Block and Lot number of the property. You get the SBL from the Assessor Office, as well as the owner's name and what the property is assessed for? That means, either you call them and send them a check for 50 cents under the Freedom of Information Act, or just go down and get it yourself. Then you give us that information, and you will be well advised.

Keep reporting it to Building Safety. According to Hayes, they know who it is. If the property continues to be a nuisance, the nuisance abatement law can be used to address it as well (with the property being taken by the city or the county and put up for sale). There's an election going on there - so get the current aldermen and prospective aldermen involved!
Don't give up. Keep reporting it!
