Description
3/15/2018 9:30 AM. Street work on Church Street. I am pulling my car out on Center St,.(VERY cautiously). As I approach the intersection, and am clearly in turn mode, a double decker bus starts to accelerate towards my driver side door (anyway). Right next to him a car speeds illegally down the closed lane, blind to me and almost totaling me. Meanwhile a delivery van backs into the intersection from in front of the Dunkin Donuts towards my other door as pedestrians stumble into the intersection into the road without a care in the world.
I beep the horn and pull out SLOWLY freezing everyone in place as a New Haven officer walks over from the complete other side of Church St. (where he was standing) with an "I'm Sorry" look on his face, as it finally dawns on him that he needs to direct traffic at the intersection from the center of Church St and he starts distributing cones. (Police work 101).
This is a typical situation. Whenvever there seems to be road work or an emergency in downtown New Haven, people are on their own.
