Description
This is possibly the biggest dump in the city of Mentor and unfortunately right by my house. There is junk and old cars everywhere in the yard. It's a major eyesore on the street and really brings down property values of the houses around it. It even stinks like used motor oil when you walk past it. The city needs to make the owners clean this place up.

That junk has been piling up for decades, not just a few years. Do you really think that if I go over and ask them to clean it up, they'll get right on it? It shouldn't be my problem to fix anyways. The city has ordinances and hires people to enforce them. Since those people are being paid with my tax dollars, they should do their jobs.
The city has no problem sending out notices when neighbors don't mow their lawns, but then they let someone get away with turning their property into a junkyard.

I don't believe some of the comments I have read here.
First of all if I where a home buyer, I would think twice about being a neighbor in that neighborhood or I would offer a low ball price and turn the house in a rental.
Second if this problem has existed for some time the people living there are not quite all there and I would not want to confront them. There are a lot of kooks out there and this sounds like one to me.

I agree with Scott. That property has been like that for as long as I can remember and if it was on a main road, the city would have dealt with it a long time ago. Since it's on a quiet street that gets little traffic, the city just chooses to ignore the issue.
I think it's interesting that under the property maintenance section, the city of Mentor's website states that, "Residential and nonresidential property owners are required to maintain the exterior of their premises so that the appearance of their property does not negatively impact the immediate neighborhood."
So just because the property was grandfathered in, it shouldn't mean the owners can do what ever they want.
