Will they have to tear it up (post-paving) when they fix this clogged catch basin. What name is Department of Public Works using for this issue: catch basin or storm drain? Service request # 1118166392 has been issued for a storm drain cleaning at McLendon Ave and Shepard Pl however, I am hoping you can clarify a few things as we are receiving different reports about this location. Is there a storm drain at this location already? We received a request on Facebook to have a storm drain unclogged. After reviewing Google Maps it doesn't appear there is one at this intersection so if you can clarify that would be great! Also, the SeeClickFix ID number and service request # we provide are different. Your SeeClickFix ID number helps us locate your request on this website but our service request # helps us locate the request in our system. In regards to Page Ave, these 2 issues have to be kept separate since they are 2 different locations. Nothing should have to be torn down however, if it is, restoration will take place. Catch basin and storm drain are both terms we use for issues like this so whichever one you prefer works for us!

Yes, thank you, I stand corrected. Neighbors are requesting that a storm drain be installed for the Sheppard Place/McLendon Intersection. What is the estimated installation date and will there be any heads up notification regarding traffic / flag men, etc?

Thank you for the further clarification. I have updated the notes on service request # 1118166392 to request a storm drain be installed and this process can take up to 45 days, possibly longer with our systems not fully restored. Since this work can be scheduled, there should be a heads up is traffic will be affected.

I apologize for inconvenience, I was just informed by Public Works that requests for new storm drains have to go through Site Development. Please reach out to them directly and submit your request by calling them at 404 330-6249 or emailing them at zoningverification@atlantaga.gov.

The service request is still open for that issue with a target resolution date of 6/13/18. Not saying it will take that long, however, that is when the request should be completed. If there are any crews performing work that may affect the water quality or anything of that nature, you all will be informed and updated accordingly.

We have not had any issues on our end and we encourage our customers to submit service requests through any platform they choose and find the easiest.

I see that request is open and assigned now and will be fulfilled. Being that you have a direct email contact within that department, you can contact them directly for updates or reach out to us.

It took me the better part of my workday, but I tracked down the Project Manager in the correct department (Office of Engineering Services, Strategic Asset Management Division) and the right team team (SWIT or Stormwater Investigation Team) and found out two things: 1) Google Maps dating to 2011 shows "historic ponding" at this site, 2) this Stormwater Department had never received any of the emails by neighbors on this street over the years. I did not realize this was a high-profile case but I am watching closely now.

Jus wanted to add a photo from this morning after the rains. Typically it takes 2-4 days for this to completely dry as there is no storm drain installed here where there clearly should have been. It’s especially an issue due to the busy nature of McLendon and the danger of trying to navigate around the water.

I was informed that there is MOST (Municipal Options Sales Tax) money which is targeted towards fixing Atlanta's aging water and sewer infrastructure: things like storm drains and sewer pipes. SWIT team member wrote that he would respond to neighbors regarding status (other departments involved, funding, etc.)of this case on 4/26/18. That
is tomorrow.

I would continue to reach out to the SWIT Team since they advised they will be providing you with updates accordingly. They would have more up to date information about this request as we can only see what they put after they update it.

SWIT TEAM wrote today, in part, "Installing a new catch basin in the roadway would be very expensive and there are numerous other issues that can be addressed that have more serious public safety concerns at this time."

In other words, let's kick this can down the road. It's been several years already. There is a preschool in the adjacent building and preschoolers have to walk out into the middle of a major street thoroughfare (McLendon Avenue) to go around this puddle.

I just want to know where this issue is in the queue and if there is a target resolution date. I will continue to reach out to Engineering, as other neighbors have done over the years, and at least I have a transparent open record here that can't be deleted.

The target resolution date for Service Request 1118166392 is 06/13/2018 at the latest. I would advise you to keep in contact with the Engineering office and also please inform us of any new developments with this crosswalk.

Yes, and I actually have you on my calendar to respond to you today with an update.

We have investigated this issue to see what other contribution factors may be involved in this matter. Our field engineer found a few stormwater basins in the area that needed cleaning and our Sewer Operation crews for Preventative Maintenance have cleaned out these structures.

While we believe that a continual overlay of pavement over the years has contributed to the ponding stormwater at this intersection, we are still looking at some financially feasible options to help reduce standing water at this location. We discussed this matter with the City’s Department of Public Works (DPW) at our monthly meeting this week and have asked their engineer to investigate what options DPW might have to help get positive drainage down to the nearest curb inlet. Installing a new catch basin in the roadway would be very expensive and there are numerous other issues that can be addressed that have more serious public safety concerns at this time.

We will follow up with DPW in the near future and let you know what possible improvements can be applied to this issue.

I wrote to SWIT team four days ago asking for update. Haven't heard back.

Yesterday's email from the SWIT team (Stormwater Investigative Team) 5/25/18:

"While we do have some limited MOST funding for stormwater projects, we have already allocated the most recent funding to projects that were in the queue quite a long time ago, and are still addressing issues that have a more severe impact to the drainage and protection of the roadways. We did have our team has inspect the drainage inlets in the same area and did find some that needed cleaning, so we then referred this work to our DWM crews to have the structures cleaned out.

In spite of our efforts to clean the stormwater basins along this area, we believe that this matter is better addressed by the City’s Dept. of Public Works (DPW), to help address roadway paving options that can better help to drain this specific area. Installation of new stormwater inlets and pipes would for this one area would be very costly and not the most effective use of the limited funding we have available.

We will remind DPW about this issue and see if they can directly respond as to their options and schedule to assist in resolving this matter."

Following up on next best (cheaper) option: paving to nearest inlet. Just sent an email reminder today asking if a DPW paving date has been scheduled. Unfortunately all the years of complaints to previous City Council were lost and this issue never got in the MOST queue. Last I heard from SWIT team on this issue was from 5/25/18, where it was last on the DPW's plate. This is an issue that cannot and WILL NOT get lost in the shuffle. Received a reply from the SWIT team that Commissioner Johnson had assigned this issue to Cotena Alexander who is now out of town until July 10, 2018. Per the email vacation notice, I have emailed Walabi@atlantaga.gov this entire thread and asked him for a date. The issue is that this intersection is the entrance to a dead end street. The neighbors on this street need plenty of advance notice or they will not be able to get out. Can we have a scheduled date for street resurfacing to nearest inlet?

I should correctly say, "positive drainage to nearest inlet" instead of resurfacing because as was pointed out, continual overlay of pavement is what probably contributed to historic ponding in the first place. That, and not having a storm drain.

Commissioner Johnson appointed someone specific on DPW as the point person on 3/16/18. I've contacted that office and sounds like they will look into it now.

"The issue has been brought to DPW-OOT attention. We are currently looking at all options available that will permanently fix this issue. As noted, one option is resurfacing the portion of the street where the ponding is happening or another option is installing a drainage system. Both options require more extensive work than noted, affects multiple properties, and will need funding that is currently unavailable from either departments. An assessment and report was completed and once reviewed, we can provide a more solid answer on the next steps."

See previous 2 comments. We heard from watershed back in October that a resolution was being assessed. I have followed up on email but have not had any response. I am escalating to the Deputy COO of the city (Joshua Williams) who I met at an event last week. He requested I send him the email chain and also put a comment here in 311. We just sent an email out to inquire on the current status of this request and will be sure to forward over information regarding the resolution for this issue.

As I mentioned before this is a T-intersection, which poses inherent dangers. McLendon Avenue is a main artery for our neighborhood, going east to west, and is heavily used during morning commute. When pedestrians from nearby preschool are forced into traffic to avoid water in the ramp, this means they are in harm's way by commuters driving EAST into the blinding morning sun.

What is the status of this non-useable ADA ramp? The last correspondence from Jim Sufferlein / DWM is hitting it's year mark. This well-documented intersection was first posted here in April 2018 and in private emails for years prior to that as stated in the first comment to this 42-comment thread. There is a disabled homeowner in near vicinity who is now unable to access this right-of-way intersection to bring his daughter to school. No, it's still not fixed but at least there is a public record of it on file. At the time this was filed here, April 2018, it had already been an issue for several years through private correspondence from multiple neighbors.
