I live on Jefferson Street and sometimes wonder if people think it is a race track. I am sick and tired of people almost hitting me when I am trying to get my mail, because they are flying down the street. One driver actually drove around and alongside my child's school bus after she had gotten on it and the bus started pulling away! This is 8:30am and a speeder is racing a school bus with MY CHILD on it? This is how bad it is!!! I would say majority of drivers that use this road go at least 10 miles over the speed limit. How many of these people are drunk in the afternoon, evening or night after leaving the casino? The police monitor the end of Jefferson near the Terrace. , but not between Crescent and Crescent.
UPDATE 8/17/11...It is even worse now that they have freshly paved! I am sick of feeling unsafe every time I take my baby for a walk or my daughter rides her bike on the adjacent side streets, such as Gridley and Crescent Street, and people come peeling around the corner off Jefferson or off one of the side streets onto Jefferson, with no regard for the other direction (if they are going right)! I can't tell you how many people I have witnessed almost get struck by a distracted, speeding driver! Please have police monitor!!!!

Another good idea for Jefferson Street would be sidewalks. There are a lit of people who walk, ride their bicycles, walk their dogs, etc., on Jefferson Street. Yet, the city only provides a sidewalk for the end of Jefferson where the city housing is. There is also a small stretch between where the Church is and Gridley, on one side, but that's it. There is no sidewalk from Whitmore Apartments all the way down to the Racino. There is even a city bus stop that is used very frequently by many of the neighborhood residents, and they have no safe place to stand.
I have also witnessed a bicyclist hit by a car turning onto Jefferson, not even looking both ways, just left before they take their right hand turn. The motorist didn't even stop, and the homeless man she hit was okay, but this just highlights the potential dangers!
When is the city going to do something? I would think that being on the same street as the Racino should offer more protection! How many of these people speeding are leaving the Racino after one too many drinks? There is a lot of potential revenue to be made by the city if only they would monitor Jefferson Street a little better on the other end, instead of just near the Terrace.
