Description
Current speed limit is 45mph. It must be reduced to 35mph from the four corners in Mt. Tremper to the Wittenberg Store. Too many speeding cars going way over the limit. I sometimes fear for my safety while out running or walking the dogs.

I have encouraged the Woodstock police to patrol the road more frequently, especially before and after the high school hours. Run at the reservoir, on Miller Road or any side road, at Wilson State park, or at the high school track. These are the same options for me as for you. Walking in the traffic lanes is not really an option and may be illegal.

Why should I have to be inconvenienced. I have a right to enjoy the surrounding areas of my home. I live in the Town of Shandaken and the police never even bother to stop anyone for speeding on the Wittenberg Road.

Resolution No. 229 July 8, 2009
From the UC Legislature:
Establishing A Pedestrian And Bicycle Policy
• Bicyclists and pedestrians are prohibited by law from using the roadway. In this
instance, bicyclists and pedestrians will be accommodated elsewhere within the
right of way or within the same transportation corridor.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
So the legislature is trying to accommodate walkers and bikers, but elsewhere, not in the roadway.
PROHIBITED!
"If there isn't a crosswalk, sign or signal at mid-block locations, a pedestrian must yield the right-of-way to all vehicles on the roadway," [Section 1152, NYS Vehicle & Traffic Law].
Please don't make assumptions or jump to conclusions. Get the facts and a workable solution can be found for everyone. Get your neighbors to petition the cops to patrol and crack down on speeders. Ask the county to widen the road to accommodate more walking.
Peds have the right of way in a crosswalk and all drivers should use due care when operating their vehicles.
