Description

This intersection is so dangerous if you are trying to make a left and turn out of East West hill. The worst part is that just to see if traffic from the right is coming you have to sneak up past the telephone pole and the front end of your car is very close to the white line. People continue to use that as their own raceway so one day someone is bound to get clipped.

Unfortunately, the town cannot install a stoplight since Route 44 is a state road, but we have discussed this intersection on numerous occasions with the CT Department of Transportation. They do not believe that a stoplight is appropriate to resolve this issue. We have applied for state funding to improve the intersection, but do not know if it will be provided or not.

Based on the Barkhamsted First Selectman's comment, the State of Connecticut is on notice of a dangerous condition. The next accident should draw a nice fat lawsuit. The cost of defending that suit pales in comparison to the cost of a light.

Absolutely Jim- even a blinking light during school hours would be more appropriate than nothing at all. It is awful to sit in a 7 car line waiting to turn left onto rt. 44. I am oftentimes late for work because of this interection.

So Don,it's been over a year so I am guessing that state funding has not been approved. How about a streetlight at the end of Eddy road/44? Have you ever tried making a left onto Eddy at night? Good Luck!

Don, Nothing new has happened? This intersection is extremely hazardous. Not only do we have to contend with a huge line of traffic during rush hour on EW hill but also a VERY narrow road to turn into when turning on to EW hill. The bridge needs to be expanded also. This is especially worse when there are tall snowbanks (and I drive a SUV!).

MORE and MORE accidents at this location! A flashing yellow/red light at the very least with aggressive vegetation cutback, while waiting for permits and funding to improve this very dangerous intersection. But something MUST be done soon!

I agree. The vegetation horrible right now. If we go out with the car we have to pull way out to see. At least I can somewhat see in the SUV.

While you are at it please widen the bridge there. We have been getting more and more large trucks using that bridge and once the bridge has one of them on it is impossible for another vehicle to pass. Please widen the road at that point.

Although it looks like a stoplight (even just a blinking yellow one) will never happen the widened intersection looks great. If anything I would suggest moving the telephone pole back a few feet so exiting traffic doesn't have to pull all the way forward. Good job Don and town crew!
