Thanks very much, but would like to keep this open as we did not think it was a Public Works issue but rather code enforcement. It seems that a home owner would not be allowed to have rusting tanks like these on their property in a residential district and hopefully Pennzoil can be encouraged to maintain them properly. These tanks have not been removed. There is a new development next to them.

Thanks for update. Pennzoil may or may not be in chain of title. Could be on list for cleanup as it may be and likely is a contaminated site. Check ownership records at County and EPA web site

I still think that the City of Alameda Code Enforcement would have some say in this, as these tanks could be considered a Nuisance (visual) or blight under local codes- since the primary issue here is that a property owner (Pennzoil) in a residential zoned district is not maintaining their property adequately. Hopefully the EPA and /or the State (Natural Resources Agency) are monitoring for active contamination. I do not think these tanks will be removed, but they should be adequately maintained -which includes rust being removed regularly and routine painting of the tanks (which is not being done)

I think Keith's suggestion for community members and neighbors to contact a Pennzoil Representative to encourage them to properly maintain these tanks is a great idea. I will see if I can find a name and address at Pennzoil. In the mean time, perhaps the City Manager or Code Enforcement could comment on whether the City has jurisdiction over these tanks and if not, what governmental agency would be most appropriate for community members to contact.

Yes! We received a flyer at our house about this. They are tearing down 39 (which include the largest tanks) and keeping the 13 that are still in use.

That's great news! Since I originally opened this topic, we have moved and are no longer residents of Alameda. but I'm so glad to hear progress is being made. Hopefully the rusting/corroded tanks are the ones being removed. I will go ahead and close this as an issue. Thanks and best regards- GB
