I live on this road also and it is a mess. I appreciate that they made some areas larger but what's the deal with those huge bumps. It is not safe to bring my Jet ski down there. It bumps around so much.

First of all, the repaving looks ridiculous and needs to be leveled out. It is hurting my suspension. When I am dodging the bumps, it is dangerous to me and other vehicles.

Though we appreciate the recent attempt to repair Big Oak Bay Road, these efforts made the road dangerously uneven. The patches have created a road that's very bumpy, uneven, and noisy. We can't imagine trying to navigate the bumps safely if riding a motorcycle.The road absolutely needs to be repaved from Hwy. 64 to the end as soon as possible. We're sorry to say the money spent on the patchwork of repairs was a complete waste, as the road is more dangerous now than it was before the patches were put in place.

i used to dodge all the pot holes, that was almost ok.
since the repairs its worse.
the resurfacing that was done months ago was a bad fix from the start.
not only was it a waste of time and money, it made the road annoyingly traversable.

In 2010/11 I wrote a letter to the then County Commissioner complaining about the condition of Big Oak Bay Road. I was informed that in 2012 the road would be resurfaced. Well you cannot imagine my disappointment when they did patch work instead. The patchwork is so bad that I believe someone who has never worked on a road crew could do better. Shoddy work ! Tthe road is in even worse condition than before. Tyler may have spent money on the road but I know most of it went to the men that spent hours standing by their trucks talking to each other and not working on the road. I called and spoke to the road department in Tyler, and requested they go out and see what kind of horrible work was being done. They were obviously too busy. As I said to the man on the phone when I called "If you lived on this road the work would have been rejected.' Please consider the danger we face on a daily basis avoiding pot holes and on coming vehicles that are doing the same coming from the opposite direction. PLEASE REDO THE ENTIRE ROAD IT IS LONG OVERDUE. Thank you.

I don't even know what the road crew was trying to patch in the first place. There were a few small pot holes, but it seems they "fixed" things that didn't need fixing. They made the road a terrible mess and horrible to drive on. They left holes in the middle of the patch, makng holes where there were none originally.

The county commissioner really needs to take a look at the work he is spending money on and the crew doing the work. They obviously need better supervision. While I appreciate all road work crews and the hard job they have, this crew obviously doesn't care about the end result. They just throw the asphalt on the road and roll over it. Done! Move on!

Please come back out and fix our road. It is our ONLY way in and out of our subdivisions.

County Road 229 is without a doubt the most dangerous road in Smith County, on a good day with a good road. However in the current condition it would rate as the most dangerous road in the state. The road and bridge engineer should be ashamed of himself for this quality of work delivered to the taxpayers on Big Oak Bay Road. Fix our road properly!!!

Tthis road is way too dangerous!!! I wish I knew who was in charge of this Roadsurfacing project!!! He deserves to be fired! Our tax dollars at work!!! I am very frustrated with the over all bad condition of our road!!! So dangerous for our motorcylclists...the "botched up Job" has caused even more issues!!!! Please someone take notice and help us get our road fixed!!!!

Update: I know of two concerned residents who have taken the additional step of contacting Carey Nix, the County Commissioner who represents the area, regarding this matter. Mr. Nix advises that the repairs done a couple of months ago used faulty materials and that the patches are being repaired this week. He also advised that the road is scheduled for a chip and seal coating next Spring. While I agree that chip and seal is part of a good maintenance program, I believe this road is due for a more comprehensive repair and resurface with asphalt and striping. As mentioned by Mr. Pinkkham, guardrails are also required on several corners. In addition, the County and State should begin the appropriate studies to install a traffic light at the corner of Big Oak Bay Road and Hwy 64, as there have been several serious accidents there in the past two years, and it will only get worse with the opening of the convenience store that is near completion. While the acknowledgement and attention to the requests to repair County Road 229 are appreciated, the road will continue to be a danger to those on motorcycles and other smaller vehicles until it is repaved. Another accident as recent as this past weekend occurred. Patching the patchwork is not the solution.

I was pleased to see the guard rail construction. However, as can be seen in the enclosed photos the railing is located in such a way as not to prevent a vehicle from going into the ditch. This is a curved section of roadway that is a left-hand sweeper also with camber toward the ditch. The railing needs to be re-located or made longer to be of any benefit. As it stands now, if a car were to slip off the road as it approaches the ditch the railing will provide a perfect ramp for a roll-over ! Once again this repair work displays the dis-interested nature of the people involved in doing the actual work. "Hey, we need a guard rail in front of that ditch" "OK, boss we will get-r-done". Yep, we got a guardrail installed - but useless. Please correct this by extending the railing or starting over. Photos following.

The radius of the roadway requires this railing to be placed much earlier in the turn as seen in this photo.

My son's Accord as it was being removed from the creek bed. The blunt embankment in the bottom of the ditch offers no means of escape once leaving the pavement.

I drive 2.7 miles on CR 229 each way every time I leave my house. The road is in terrible shape. The recent patching job made the road worse. This road is the only access to several hundred homes and needs to be repaired to safe standards.

May 11th . Has there been any further progress on getting Big Oak Bay re-surfaced ? Are the plans to fix or replace the guardrail that is pictured above ?

Thank you for re-paving several sections of Big Oak Bay Road. It is an improvement over what we formerly were driving on.

The road surface was resurfaced recently to a very good condition, then for some reason gravel and tar was placed on the road, the gravel is very loose and has messed up my new corvette with tar and the like. Please sweep off the gravel.

Big Oak Bay Road was recently paved with asphalt and was in very good condition. Then Gravel and tar was placed on the good road making it hazardous to tires, windows and cars in general. The excess loose gravel needs to be swept of. Some gravel has completely disappeared exposing the clean asphalt road. Now , this is going to lead to pot holes and more loose gravel. I was surprised gravel was placed on a perfectly good road.
