It's quite disturbing that many motorists refuse to respect the paint! Most of the white stripes have vanished due to being driven on, repeatedly. Seriously, what is up with that?

Sounds like a good application for raised bike lanes or armadillo dividers.

A vehicle was parked in the bike lane just north of this intersection yesterday.

Yeah, it is almost like some sort of physical protection for people would keep cars out of the bike lane...

I think snow plows and winter do a great job of damaging painted lines. I would happily drive on a painted line vs destroy my suspension.

I drove North Avenue and there were simply no potholes worth avoiding. In spite of that, the painted bike lane line AND even the double yellow is completely gone in spots.

Absolutely not. If you can’t drive over them safely to get out of the way of an emergency vehicle then you are drivin way too fast. If you can’t stay in the proper lane driving under normal conditions and keep hitting them, you shouldnt be driving.

Same with potholes or rough roads in general. If you are swerving all over the road to avoid them, you’re driving too fast for conditions. This isn’t a big city. It doesn’t take that long to drive anywhere. Going 5 mph slower won’t get you there more than a minute or two later but it makes the road exponentially safer for everyone. The speed limit is neither a minimum limit nor an absolute right.

But the armadillos were not put back. Hmm, I wonder why? Who will pay for your raised bike lanes?
Burlington's roads are so bad that 5-10 mph under the speed limit doesn't help. Its called defensive driving, it was taught in drivers ed.

The speed limit is fine. Driving over rough road has yet to damage my vehicle, and shouldn’t damage any vehicle. I did have to report a pothole in the bike lane last week. Bicycles don’t cause that. Stop driving in the bike lane to avoid rough road. I can take a photo of lack of potholes that people are driving in to the bike lane to avoid. I pass through on my bike daily.

No bicycles don't cause that, an improperly prepped road subsurface before asphalt in combination with rain, snow, freezing and thawing cause that.

If there are no potholes, what are they avoiding?

There is no amount of paint that I can't drive over to avoid damage to my car. If there is no one in the bike lane then as far as I am concerned it is just asphalt, an extension of the road. It was roadway before it was a bike lane.

Yeah repaint it back to four lanes. Let the bicyclists bike on the bike path!

Are you serious? Sharing the road means not driving in the bike lane. It means slowing down instead of passing unsafely.

That is a great question! The south end of North Ave is where I feel the most uncomfortable when riding my bike between the moving vehicles to my left and the parked ones to my right!

What I love about the photo taken is the 1 cyclist in the bike lane and another cyclists in the vehicle lane. Please repaint the bike lane lines so cyclists stay in their lane.

Both people on bikes in that photo are well within the bike lane. As designed, the bike lane is 6.5' wide with a 3' painted buffer between the bike lane & the travel lane. In that particular section shown the road is wide enough that there is additional buffer between the bike lane & the sidewalk for snow storage (since there is no green belt).

That is exactly why I posted this to be fixed in the first place... You can't see what I'm talking about since all the paint has been worn away. Both the outside lines (painted buffer) have been worn away, thus this issue is titled "Please repaint bike lanes"

Crucial ingredient to creating potholes: automobiles driving over weakened asphalt.

There isn't a mandatory use law in Burlington or in Vermont, which means a person on a bike can use the bike lane, or the travel lane if they choose.

You are correct, over weakened asphalt. If DPW maintained the roads and prepared the surface properly it wouldn't happen. But first, lets just blame the cars.

Last time I checked, I'm not as wide as a car. But if the bike lane is full of pot holes because of entitled drivers, then yeah, I'm legally taking the travel lane and you're just going to have to be sad about it.

Acknowledging the automobile's role in the degradation of our city's roads isn't blaming them. Obviously, how we are building our roads isn't sustainable right now.

This dialogue does not sound like a bike friendly community. All of this back and forth is bs. Until motorists and cyclists both feel respected by each other North Ave will continue to be a war zone.

Perhaps the snow plow removed the paint or the sweeper or maybe it was a bad paint job. Stop the childish finger pointing. Some people choose to bike some choose to drive a car. Neither is wrong just different. Stop already!

Traffic Department repainted the bike lanes on North Avenue on 6/9.
