Where are homeless people in Kingston supposed to go for help?

Furthermore, what are their rights to exist in City limits? They are still citizens, and if committing no crimes, what right do any of us have to interfere with their chosen lifestyle?

I understand this guy had a previous post about him, and he may be an exception to this.

BUT There has been a lot of posts recently about homeless on this board, and it is somewhat disheartening. It is not disheartening that we are discussing it, but in fact that the tone of "get them out of here" flies very high.

Gerald, thanks for being proactive, but what is the"Family" that you called? was it the family of the person in the car? Or is it a local shelter?

And on that note, What is the local shelter for Kingston? what's its address?

And lastly, if these people know about the shelters, and arent using them.... why arent they?

I am assuming that the "Family" referred to is Family of Woodstock. Among other services, Family provides shelters, emergency food pantries, court advocates, and case management services. They have several locations locally:

In addition to Family of Woodstock, the Department of Social Services can provide some resources. Unfortunately, many of the local resources are currently strained, and there is often a long waiting time.

As far as I know, the Darmstadt Shelter is currently the ONLY homeless shelter in Kingston. Previously, people were also housed at the Family Inn on Broadway, but that has since closed.

As for why people are not using the shelters, it may be a number of things...there may not be room available. Some people may not know how to access these resources. For others, it may be more comfortable to sleep out in a park than on a cot next to a stranger.

Thank you, Gerald, for being so proactive. I agree with the above poster...it would be great to see others join in to solve the problem of homelessness in the city, rather than to try and run the homeless out.

again,. the kings inn would be the right place for these people. but again kingston doesn't want to do the right thing. it s all about money. if this man is using the street as a toilet this is just as bad as dogs deficating all over the place and not having it picked up..... call the health dept about this....it might be the right agency for get the help .

If it is on Broadway, it will start to accumulate parking tickets, and when it gets enough, it will be booted and towed. Sounds like the guy needs some help. If we could come up with a workable solution for the problem, it would be good. These are tough times for many.

The car in the lot owned by M&L nail Salon.. That business owner does not want it there.. Bill receives full Social Security. He has been run out of the HELP shelters due to his criminal past and his past sex offender status.( he has done his time). He is a huge problem and I will have nothing to do with him or help him.. He needs to go back where he came from and go and live with his family.. He has many of them.. This is the reason why I am leaving Kingston with in the year and he is the main issue kingston will face in the coming years.

I highly doubt this man wants to live out of his car. The better question would be what could we do to help him? Desperate times, desperate measures.

It amazes me the hatefulness of the original poster. You are correct, I would not want something like this in my front yard either, but I would be able to look in my heart and try to figure out what could be done to help this man and get him in a safe environment. The issue of him urinating and defecating in public is certainly not acceptable. That alone I think would warrant a 72 hour hold for assessment. Yes, something has to be done. But that something can be compassionate also.

I would like to tell Julie that I have dealt with this gross person for all of the time his disgusting car has been at Perry's and on the street near my home.. I am tired of dealing with people like HIM in Kingston.. I have tried compassion while he peed by his car in front of my children. I tried to reason while he snotted out of his nose at me and told me to leave him alone.. I have no more to give.. I know of this man from Elizabeth manor.. he was foul, abusive, disgusting, dirty and touched people inappropriately there. He was asked by the police to leave, at the time he was still on his sex offender time.. Please if you have compassion, go to M&L nail salon and give him some or visit him at the Queens galley where he eats and is disruptive and abusive to staff and to residents.. I am sure he could use your comfort.. I am done and he needs to GO.....

He may very well be suffering mental illness or dementia, at no fault of his own.

another comment of mine is that this man is on Social Security as i am.. I live in a great apartment and can afford it every month.. This man buys alcohol and god knows what, has drug dealers sitting on his car on the weekends ( Omar and his girlfriend) and he wants to live like this. IT IS HIS CHOICE.. I have talked to Mr. Berke about this subject and he asked me to open a new post about this matter.. Kingston needs to do a better job in helping people who have problems like this, anyone living like this has a severe mental problem.. Do not get mad at me for having no more compassion to give.. I don't believe that they would ever ask you for your social security number unless they were arresting you.

As long as a car is legally registered and parked there isn't much anyone can do about it.

I called 3 times that night, not once.. They have asked for my Social Security number. I am not a lire. I watched the car from my house from 8.15 pm until 9.30 pm. NO RESPONSE.. I WATCHED 3 KPD CARS GO UP AND DOWN BROADWAY AND NOT ONE WENT TO THE CAR. I have never been arrested and when they come and talk to me about any incident in question they run me for warrants and ask my S.S number. I do not know who you are but it is the area I live in and no I have no past with them and I am a respectable member of this community.

Interesting, makes you wonder what kind of vibe you give off or what kind of interactions the KPD have had with you int he past if the police run your name for warrants. I have had a number of interactions with the KPD (noisy neighbors, people fighting on the street, etc.) and they have NEVER EVER asked for my SS and have never run my name for warrants. Wonder what it is you are not telling us...

ever since the mid hudson psch. center in hyde park closed, we have been having this type of person living on the streets. they sure don't fit into the available housing we have here in ulster. nor do they fit into our society either, they are mentally sick individual that need help.we need to get that type of facility opened again . how do we do it??????

It is very sad that we don't have services for these people. I am not saying that they are not disruptive and not saying they are not dangerous and unpleasant to be around, but ultimately they are people -- usually very sick (mentally) people. Whether this sickness comes from drug addiction, alcoholism, genetic disposition, whatever, we need to address that issue and take care of each other. When people scream and holler about how situations effect them as opposed to trying to find answers to fix the community, then nothing ever gets done.

I don't know how the mental health services work in New York, but I question as to whether or not this man could be considered a danger to himself and thus a candidate for a 72 hour watch. That would at least get him in the system, get him some help and if the car is non-functioning and abandoned, get it off the street.

As I have said I am a respectable member of this community, well known at the Clinton Ave. Church, Crime Victims and Anger Management Centers through out Kingston and I have worked with Holly Karnright and Tracy Steves in putting a level 1 sex offender behind bars.. What have you done for Kingston? You judge me!! Really Julie.. After the police realize who I am they apologize, usually it is the new members on the force who run the S.S numbers and check for warrants. They have told me it is part of doing business.. You do not even know they are doing it.. They ask you for your full name and phone number do they not.. Do not Judge Julie.. You do not know me and the issue on here is about Bill P. He is still homeless and living in his car on your city streets.. I am leaving your city,, as soon as possible..

What I'm not getting is that some people on here know his name and that he get's full Social Security. How do they know this? If you know this much about this man, then you should know if he has any family to help him. I would not want him doing the things that he is doing in public either. My point is, if I knew that much about a homeless man, I would try and find family members or agencies to help him. Remember people, we all have a family and we all have skeletons. Whether we want to admit it or not, no family is perfect. He must be homeless for a reason. From what I'm reading, he seems to have some mentsal problems, and possibly a drug issue. There are agencies to help him, instead of griping, call some and get him the help since it bother's you so much. I feel very sorry for him, maybe he can't help himself, or, doesn't know how. Some people just don't want to be bothered, they just feel that homeless people are beneath them, like gum under their shoe. If this man really bother's vyou, you will find a way to solve YOUR problem with him. Take Allison's advice and call some of those agencies and explain it to them to get him out of your sight. Shame on those who just gripe and don't try to help a fellow human in need.

And Socrates code of human conduct was "The unexamined life is not worth living." As a code of conduct, we can say that he meant that it is very important for each person to spend time in deep contemplation of such ideas as justice, right and wrong, truth and beauty and then to insure that they live their own lives in conformity with the right and the good. This is as opposed to merely existing from day to day with no regard for anything beyond one's personal comfort and happiness.

No was or is judging you. We're just questioning what you are putting out on a public forum. Keep in mind, another saying ... When you point a finger in blame at another person, you have three fingers pointing back at yourself.

As a community we can help each other -- including you and including this man who obviously has a problem. He doesn't deserve punishment -- he needs help.

Working with the court system it is Holley Carnright....but it needs to be fixed one way or another.

The police did make a visit, promptly... they found no police violation taking place. That is all they can do.
Via Family and DSS and Temporary Assitance and Adult Protective services, the incident has been accepted, written down and will be acted on (noon, wednesday, june30)
I have no idea what the outcome will be but I get a call back or will call in for disposition tomorrow.
Let me say, by good luck or whatever, the police were very helpful, Family cannot! go out, but must get a call FROM the client, they would help them get to social services, and social services could OFFER help which can be refused.
Adult protective services can take action IF there is a risk of danger to the person or the public.
But note: this is a very very very free country and it is very hard to take somebody away without there being 1) a clear violation of law and 2) the proper agency that enforces the law. So you gotta keep on truckin'
The hard work all you people are doing is worthwhile and appreciated. At the end of this, lets all take note of what was done, what worked, what didn't, and learn.
The man needs help but so does our city and the citizens that Bill P "visits"... personally, I am sooo glad he is NOT on my street. And we all get our share or a little bit more.
Yes, this citizen work you are doing is valuable and is not easy.

Last time I saw the car it was still at M&L nail salon on Saturday when the police were questioning Bill . He was siting in the car and the owner of the salon was yelling she wanted him removed from the parking lot.. I did not know where the car went after that? Thanks for letting every one know.. I feel better now.. He is living in the Academy Green Park during the day and night.. A new problem!!!!!
