I'm curious whether the speed display device actually records people's speeds. If not, and we need to make the case both for more aggressive enforcement and for reengineering the design of the street to slow people down, we might as a neighborhood consider hiring our own contractor to measure speed data. I would guess heading east down the hill from Forest Rd, most people are well over 35-40mph in a 25 mph zone. It would be good to show what it actually is, though.

From what I've been told those devices don't record anything; only show you what you're doing whilst driving past. You can always speak to Lt. Still no progress. If an officer just parked on Edgewood between Forest and Mckinley for 15 minutes (or better yet, parked on Alston at the corner of Edgewood, watching cars in both directions), he or she could write 15 tickets. There have been several more serious accidents in the past year, and though I drive this stretch of Edgewood many times a day, I have NEVER seen an officer posted anywhere in the vicinity. The speed limit is clearly posted at 25mph but no one obeys the limit and many cars travel at 50MPH here. This is otherwise a nice neighborhood, but the safety and peace and quiet have been hijacked. I would surely complete a Streets Request Form for this street.

Hamden has new speed limit signs, which show your current speed, and they flash a light, which looks as if it is taking a photo of you and your car, if you are going over the posted speed limit. The signs really seem to slow people down.
Essentially, the speed limit is a design problem. The roads are designed to allow people to drive much faster than the stated limits. Do you ever see anyone driving 50 mph on I95? Even simple things, like a piece of rope, or water, on the road, make most people drive more slowly. I "water" the road, in the morning, when I water my garden, and people speeding, on my street, tend to shave about ten miles an hour off of their speed - you can hear them backing off of the throttle.
Also, while there have, on occasion, been police doing speed enforcement, in East Rock, the cops usually park in a spot where they are visible to speeding drivers, so no, or very few tickets get written. Also, if the cop is writing a ticket, everyone else just speeds past, as they realize the cop is occupied. Really, the American "love affair" i.e. abusive relationship with the car needs to be seriously re-evaluated.

I just had an idea: a sprinkler activated by a radar gun, which sprays water into the road, when a speeding car approaches....

Cool idea, design meets reality.

I like the idea of props and street theater, too, which some residents have recently floated around as an occasional solution to be deployed.

In Fair Haven, we also gave out cookies to passing drivers.

In the long term, I maintain that an infrastructure solution is needed. That is why I think neighbors need to request that more Complete Streets forms be completed (see other issue linked below).

We need a consistent (or at least occasional!) police officer presence sitting on Edgewood between Forest Rood and Alden Road with a speed trap. The average speed is still about 40+ mph in this area, and not unusual to see someone going closer to 50mph or more at least every 3-4 minutes. There continue to be regular accidents and near-misses on a weekly basis. We have many pedestrians, walking children and seniors, as well as cars trying to turn onto these side streets (Mckinley, alden, alston) without being able to slow down bc the cars behind them are going at such a good clip. Just bring a portable radar detector with a sign that tells people their speed - that will at least bring attention to the problem. But nothing like a few tickets a day to let the world know to slow down in our 'hood.

Thanks! Still way too many accidents and near-misses at corner of Mckinley and Edgewood heading in both directions. Making a right turn onto McKinley from Edgewood (coming from Forest) is nearly impossible because the drivers going 40MPH behind me and the turn requires one to slow down to slower than 25MPH, especially in presence of ice/snow/slush. An occasional traffic control officer would be nice.

Thank you for keeping this open. I am not sure it is a policing issue though - the road is designed for speeding, and people are not going to drive slowly until there are some changes made to the design and the posted speed limit. The city hasn't shown any signs that it would be willing to post an officer here and issue tickets every week at rush hour.

Please, please, we need an officer to sit on the right side of Edgewood, facing downtown, and as the cars go whizzing across Forest Rd, and down towards Alston, McKinley and Alden, the nice officer needs to flag them down and write a few tickets. PLEASE!!! Hopefully, this might make people slow down. Since we moved here 4.5 years ago, there have been regular accidents on the corner of Edgewood and McKinley due to speeding motorists. Chapel street in the same area has the same problem. I could write at least 50 tickets an hour in either location.
