Description

As others have noted, cars reach excessive speeds at night on this stretch. I think that it is because it is a long, nearly straight stretch. In addition, pedestrians and bicyclists using this crossing are often obscured by buses pulling up to stops that are too close to the intersection. I often cross this intersection. I estimate that I have used it about 8,000 times in the past decade. Exactly one car has stopped for me, following the law. 7,999 have ignored the pedestrian's right of way. Kids often use this crosswalk to get to the nearby park. At the very least, the crosswalk, which meets current standards in other respects, should be striped on Maitland. This should be installed immediately and would cost little. A light would a better speed control, but it would take time to install. A light should be given priority in the budget before a pedestrian accident occurs. This would be far more serious than the car-car accidents that occur way too often on this stretch of road.
