I beg to differ-you'd likely see the same thing that happens when the right lane is lost after New Hampshire - people speeding up down the right side then merging in at the last second, causing significant backups. Left or right, a merge will cause a backup, especially as long as people don't merge in an orderly fashion and insist on cutting everyone else off.
