Deskripsyon

The Beltway Eastbound just past the Connecticut Avenue exit loses a lane on the left, forcing cars to merge from left to right, slowing traffic. If a lane on the right was lost instead, cars would merge in a more orderly and smoother right to left manner.

I beg to differ-you'd likely see the same thing that happens when the right lane is lost after New Hampshire - people speeding up down the right side then merging in at the last second, causing significant backups. Left or right, a merge will cause a backup, especially as long as people don't merge in an orderly fashion and insist on cutting everyone else off.

I agree with the original suggestion of removing the left merge. Left merges are always problematic. But I'd welcome hearing an explanation from the state traffic department as to why one is better or worse than the other.
