Description
I was a passenger in a car headed westbound on 16 and witnessed the following scenario (which I've often seen play out at crosswalks).
1. Minivan in right lane slows down and stops - at red light, plus pedestrians are crossing.
2. Vehicle behind it - silver Kia, MA plate 6HX 718 - swerves into the left lane cutting off the car behind it
3. The Kia proceeds to run the light at least 2 seconds after it turned red - with the pedestrian HALF WAY through the intersection - the car came within 6 feet of the person whose line of sight was blocked by the minivan in the right lane.
Vehicles run/block this crossing all the time, whether intentionally or because they don't see the light, doesn't matter. This is a very unsafe crossing, something needs to be done - raised crosswalk, etc.

All these close calls, and more, require a more concerted response.
Massachusetts reports rising injuries from crashes, many the result of inattention.
The speed limit on Fresh Pond Parkway was recently reduced from 30 MPH to 25 MPH. Yet, at the speed radar sign near Larchwood Avenue, one can regularly see speeds over 40 MPH and off hours this last Sunday at 3:30PM, over 50 MPH.
During the DCR Corridors Study of Fresh Pond Parkway and Mount Auburn Street, a series of steps were developed to assure safer neighborhood connections, walks to school, and other safe uses of the Parkway. These steps included: 25 MPH, speed radar signs, raised table crossing (designed for 25 MPH for all intersections and pedestrian crossings), an additional pedestrian crossing at the Water Department (to connect the to be built Watertown/Cambridge Greenway), and enforcement.
The safety of our neighborhoods, going to the market, going to school or the park, all require action.
Since January, there has been one report of Cambridge Police enforcing speed on the Parkway. (Thank you, I know that the State Polce have primary responsibility). There has been no report of State Police enforcement.
