Description
The set of the walking dead or the City of East Point? Another abandoned neglected home left to rot for 2 years after a storm. Owners "promised" code enforcement to clean up the property. That was months ago and nothing has changed. This decayed home sits at one of the entry streets to Colonial Hills neighborhood. Nothing days welcome home like a @#$% House. No real reprocussions from the City of East Point.

I already made a complaint about this more than 6 months ago. It's not storm damage. The new owners of the property decided to 'demolish' it using 3 guys in a pickup truck. I asked the city of EP in the complaint 6 months ago if a permit to demolish had been filed - no response on that point. I asked exactly how long the owners have to complete work once it was started because at that time the house had been in that state for at least 6 months - the permit office's response was that there was no time requirement, which seems crazy. My primary concern is public safety, in that the site is a disaster waiting to happen regarding people, pets and kids. It's not secured in any way and the whole floor with gaping holes is suspended above a debris (glass, bricks, boards with nails, etc) filled basement.
It's an embarrassment to the city and represents financial exposure because the complaints are on record - the city has known about it for over a year now. If you dared to make a backyard deck more than 14 inches of the ground without a code-compliant handrail, the city of East Point would cite you.. The owners of this property must have some city connection(s) - I can think of no reason for the city of have let this situation go on so long. East Point zoning trucks travel down Newnan street multiple times a day - *Where are the all going* if they can't see this?

It's a version of the 80/20 rule. 80% of the properties which are the real horrors of Colonial Hill -- the properties that make the whole area look bad -- are investor or 'future' developer-owned properties. These owners intentionally *do not want to be found* -- they are interested in playing the longest game possible, playing rope-a-dope with the city, refusing to invest in even the most minimal of maintenance, and we are all suffering in the process.
The City of East Point needs to pull a few bucks off the top of the budget for all the new municipal building that's going on downtown and instead hire a some legal talent to go after the owners of these trash-piles. Fine them, or seize and sell the properties to responsible parties -- the short, the mayor and the other civil servants that we pay need to *do their job* -- other cities have read the riot act to owners like this, and in the process transformed neighborhoods for their constituents -- Where is our man on the street Thomas Callahan in all this? It's disgusting. It truly is.
