This is a homesteaded property that is rented out by the night! I object to paying more in taxes while these owners abuse the homesteaed exemption. Please inforce our laws against this abuse.

I don’t know the specifics about this property ... but renting your home nightly while you are away is legal in many cases. There are limits on the total number of nights per year etc. But assuming the owner still lives there more than half the year, then they are still entitled to a homestead exemption regardless of whether they rent it out part of the year. And assuming they pay taxes on those rented nights, it actually helps to keep other taxes down. Personally, the only thing I object to is when they are renting to people who aren’t respectful of the community or throw parties or generate extra street parking etc. :(

Kwithers2000 is wrong if you are talking about the City of St Pete. Renting a home for less than one month is illegal under city code.

Report and Report - There are transient and non-transient laws that have to be followed when renting out to the public. If there is a homestead on the property report the fraud to pcpao.org.

It is time that everyone takes the appropriate action and report these illegal businesses.

kwithers2000 if a home is homesteaded, the owners cannot rent it out. They have to be residing in their home to get the homestead.

I only have experience on my block. There's along term rental house where the grass is rarely mowed and the house is in disrepair. The renters don't care and neither do the owners. Also, there's a short term rental home that is kept in pristine condition. I'll take short term rentals in my neighborhood over long term any day.

I have seen quite a few get shut down, so unless the lawbreaker wants to continue breaking the law and getting fined, these illegal rentals will go away. It's just like people who run stop signs and red lights at some point they will be paying for it and these fines are on their records.
