If a stop sign is not permitted, perhaps a solar powered posted speed limit signal (25 MPH) with a "your speed" clocked message, would help this dangerous situation.

Stop signs at every other intersection of 79th St would help slow down traffic heading into Yacht Club Estates.

i fully support this idea. planters and roundabouts only serve to even more limit foot/bike path room. but a stop sign at 3rd ave south is terrific. i'd happily stop there...

I support any action that will slow traffic on 79th St S. Living on 3rd, I see people speed up at that point because the street widens at 79th if you are going south. Unfortunately, people don't slow down if they're coming north on 79th at that point. Stop sign works for me!

Thank you for your SeeClickFix e-mail to the Mayor’s Action Center reference speeding in the 7800 block of 3 Avenue South. The Mayor has asked me to respond directly to you regarding your concern. On July 30, 2018, Selective Enforcement Officer Arrison responded to the area to conduct traffic enforcement. He reports that the majority of vehicles were in compliance with the posted 25 mph speed limit. However, he did measure one vehicle speed at 38 mph and two at 40 mph. All three vehicles were cited accordingly. The Selective Enforcement Unit will continue to monitor the area and take enforcement action as necessary. I believe the street requiring the stop sign is 79th Street South at 3rd Avenue South, not the 7800 block of 3rd Avenue South. Was this just a typo or did the officer actually clock cars on 3rd Avenue S?????. I would like to reopen the See Click Fix request for a stop sign on 79th Street South. Please clarify the status for me. Thanks! Ed Gessen

That is correct. 7900 block of 3rd Ave S.

Stop signs installed in the wrong places for the wrong purposes usually create more problems than they solve.
One common misuse of stop signs is to arbitrarily interrupt traffic, it causing it to stop. Studies made in many parts of the country show that there is a high incidence of intentional violations where stop signs are installed as "nuisances" or "speed breakers". These studies showed that speed was reduced in the immediate vicinity of the "nuisance" stop signs, but, speeds were actually higher between intersections than they would have been if these signs hadn't been installed.

At the right place and under the right conditions, a stop sign tells drivers and pedestrians who has the right of way. Nationally recognized standards have been established to determine when stop signs should be used. These standards, or "warrants", take into consideration, among other things, traffic speed and
volume, sight distance and the frequency of traffic "gaps" which will allow safe vehicle entry or pedestrian crossing.

Most drivers are reasonable and prudent. But, when confronted with unreasonable restrictions, they frequently violate them and develop a general contempt for all traffic controls--often with tragic results.

This would actually reduce safety along 79th Street, which is why arbitrary stop signs are not an option and we will continue with selective enforcement by the police.

1) Would additional medians with palm trees on 79th St S help mitigate the speed issue? (we have talked about this before)
2) Would a solar powered sign on 79th St S (photo attached) clocking "Your Speed is XX, Speed Limit is 25MPH" help?
