Thank you! Your report has been successfully submitted. Your City Service Request is #4146. Thank you for making SeaTac a better place. (Note: If this is an emergency, please call 911.)
The City will perform pedestrian traffic counts at this intersection to better assess the situation and justify any improvements.
The Military Rd S & S 160th St Project, identified in the City of SeaTac Transportation Master Plan as ST-116, proposes to fill in the sidewalk gap along the north side of 160th Street between 34th Avenue and Military Road. If pedestrians are crossing this intersection and utilizing the sidewalk on the west side of Military Road as one is not available on the east side, the need for a crosswalk may be eliminate by the ST-116 improvements. Additionally, this intersection may not be the safest location for a crosswalk due to the road’s curvature and associated visibility issues. Intersections north or south of Military Road and 160th may be considered instead for a crosswalk as a part of ST-116. It is important that crossings be accessible to everyone per the Americans with Disabilities Act standards, which is why pedestrian facilities identified in ST-116, including sidewalk and ramps, are needed for a proposed crosswalk.
The Sidewalk Advisory Committee is a good option to advocate for sidewalks projects. They develop selection criteria to rank potential projects and make recommendations to the council. Public comments are welcome at the end of each meeting (held monthly on the third Thursday from 6-7pm). More information here: http://www.ci.seatac.wa.us/government/city-departments/public-works/neighborhood-sidewalk-committee).
As we have not yet conducted a traffic study and I did not see any pedestrian traffic during my site visit, please responds to the following questions/comments to help us better understand the situation:
1. Confirm issue is related to pedestrians crossing Military Road and not 160th Street.
2 To help us target peak pedestrian usage: On what day of the week and at what time of day have you noticed pedestrians crossing? In what direction are they traveling after crossing?
3. Are you aware of a location between 34th and 164th to where pedestrians are traveling such that crossing at 34th Avenue or 164th Street would be inconvenient?
My two cents worth - Filling in the sidewalk gap on the north side of 160th will fix the issue and likely be safer than a crosswalk at that corner. My dog walks me up or down 160th (from 160th or Military depending on my dog's whims that day) in that area and we have to "jaywalk" since there is no sidewalk on the north side. If there were a sidewalk, we could use the crosswalk at 160th & International/99 or the one at Military and 164th.
We live off 160th and 51st so if we travel west on 160th to International, we cross near the indicated intersection because there is no north sidewalk...and vice versa if we are coming from International headed home. Just depends on which way my dog wants to walk me that day.
I do see quite a few other people crossing 160th at different spots between 34th & the indicated intersection - at different times of day/different days of the week. Nothing set in stone.
Military & 160th street direction Eastward on 160th street toward 42nd street is a direct walking path towards Southcenter. Both families and working individuals walk on the side of the 160th street road. Tukwila has sidewalk East of 42nd street on 160th street. Padestrians , delivery trucks and cars compete for this short block.

Penny and Mark,
Thank you for your input.
24-Hour pedestrian traffic counts were performed on Thursday, 9/6/2018. 103 pedestrians used the intersection on that day. Approximately a third would benefit from filling in the sidewalk gap along 160th including those crossing at the north and south leg of this intersection and those walking along the eastside of 160th where no sidewalk is present. This same issue also exists at the intersections of 158th St and 160th St. These counts as well as input from the residents of the City will be used justify the need for a pedestrian improvement project. If approved, the pedestrian improvement project will consist of approximately 600 feet of sidewalk between 34th Avenue and Military Road. The sidewalk gap along the north side of S 160th St, west of 34th Ave S, will be incorporated as part of the 34th Ave S Sidewalk Project, which is currently in design. If you have any additional questions about project selection, please feel free to contact Florendo Cabudol, the City Engineer, at the following email address: FCabudol@seatacwa.gov Thank you,
