Description
Eastbound vehicle traffic on Liberty at State St. must turn left or right. However, their green light cycle coincides with the pedestrian walk cycle to cross State St. putting them into direct conflict. I observe regularly that people in cars turning do not realize that people on foot crossing State also have a green signal and right of way too.
As this is a T-intersection, the signal cycle should be adjusted to eliminate these conflicts. One option is a "scramble" - letting people on foot walk in all 3 crossings simultaneously without vehicle traffic. Another is simply to have separate cycles for the pedestrian crossings of State (east-west, north and south sides of Liberty), and another cycle for vehicle traffic turning from Liberty to north or southbound State St. Could also allow right turns from southbound State to westbound Liberty in this cycle.
Given the proximity to campus and high volume of people on foot, it makes sense to have a signal cycle that reflects the geometry of this T-intersection.
The same applies to State & William, and State & N. University. There is a great opportunity to make these 3 T-intersections safer for everyone.
Thanks for looking into this and your efforts to improve safety all around town.
