It is traditional for neighbors to put out items other's might want. Typically most things are gone within a day and if they aren't they are typically removed after a day goes by. There are a lot of needy folks that can use some of the items we no longer need or want. Let's be good neighbors and allow some leniency for a day.
I will dispute the “tradition” of discarding unused items by placing them on the street. I’m almost every case the items are damaged or useless. The owners are too lazy to dispose of them legally. I will also dispute that most items are gone within a day.
Junked furniture on the street inevitably leads to increasing trash on the streets. Not
Long ago someone left a convertible sofa in front of my dwelling. It rained, wet cushions were scattered along the street. A few days later someone removed all the metal parts from the convertible mechanism and left a moldy pile onto which others threw their trash.
The folks who pick up illegally dumped items are very responsive and do a great job. We should thank them for doing a good job keeping our streets free of discarded items.
There are plenty of ways to advertise that you have free furniture available to be taken away and those work very well. Dumping your unwanted items on the street is not the best way to do it and it does create trash. There are also laws against doing it and landlords are fined when their tenants do this (as well as homeowners). I've also seen people dump their furniture across the street from their house so they don't get pegged as the responsible party...
It frustrates me to see people just having their garbage furniture picked up when I've done the right thing and scheduled my pick up.
Efrain Oliveras that was a very mean and a totally unnecessary comment. We are all here to make the City a better place to live. Comments like yours are nasty and do absolutely nothing to help the goal. If you are unable to be a positive change agent then refrain from commenting. We don't need it.
Except on a trash collection day or a scheduled bulk trash removal appointment, NO ONE IS ALLOWED TO PLACE PERSONAL ITEMS ON THE PUBLIC RIGHT OF WAY. Illegal dumping, no matter how big or small, is wrong and is subject to a $100.00 per day fine. Put a little skin in the game and donate to a cause in New Haven, they may need the furniture. Alternatively, sell it on Ebay or Craigs list. Or, donate it to the Goodwill Donation center on State Street. A women's shelter or a homeless center.
LCI official!!! I have a right to comment I pay taxes and probably you don’t even pay taxes in this neighborhood so if you don’t like it that’s too bad but it’s my right to say what I have to say, With your salary is probably enough to pay to collect all these “trash that we have to pay for on top of all the high taxes thank you very much
Efrain Oliveras, you're absolutely right. Without question you have the right to say what you want. Our veterans are always fighting to make sure we keep that right. It is one of our sacred rights. My comment was that your comment "Why don't you just move then if you don't like it." Is rude, classless, crass and nasty. It does not add anything positive to the dialogue, nor does it thrust us into a positive direction. It does nothing to help the cause or move the agenda forward. It merely hurts or shuts people out of an otherwise open and free discussion. We need to establish a real sense of community here. We should be brainstorming to develop ideas that can actually make a neighborhood a great place to live in. This is what it is all about, people getting together to make positive changes in their community.
