How many police officers do you think Malden has? If people don’t know enough to use the crosswalk and walk on the sidewalk then the police should have to babysit them? Common sense should solve this problem.

This project is far better mitigated for pedestrians than most others in the region.

The City has several projects in the works to improve the crossings near the MBTA Station. The City received a Complete Streets grant to make the crossing at Commercial / Route 60 safer for pedestrians and a project to improve crossings and sidewalks along Exchange Street from the T station to Main Street has been funded by Mass DOT.. More of safety improvements will occur once construction has been completed on the new buildings / City Hall.

The police department serves to protect people. The construction zone and the mass exodus of people from the train station at rush hour generates a dangerous situation for pedestrians. There should be an officer assigned to the area during morning and afternoon rush hours. MBTA should also have an officer assigned to the area during these times.

The issue isn’t just cars. Can’t tell you how many times I see people crossing against the green or crossing no where near the cross walk near the Dunkin‘ Donuts. Many don’t even look they just walk. Maybe the police should start ticketing for j walking too.

That area is going to be a mess until the project is done and pedestrians need to take care to, don’t assume a car is is going to stop for you. You don’t have the right of way if you are not in a cross walk or the light is green.

Everyone pay attention and this will work itself out just fine. Cross at the crosswalk when the light says to. Stop at the red lights and walk on the sidewalk. Pretty self explanatory. Now you want two cops there??? When is the last time you saw a Transit cop at Malden station?

Reopening. This issue is anything but fixed, despite Anonymous User's inability to count and his strange aversion to the police ensuring resident safety.

(For the record, there are 6-dozen+ patrol officers and we're talking about the single most heavily foot-trafficked location in the city--to the point that the Chief himself is onsite in the station more evening rush hours than not. There is also frequently a transit officer at the station, and I actually got the idea for placing an officer near the jersey barrier from...wait for it...and officer actually already having been placed there some days, which greatly improved the situation at that time.)

There is no reason the construction company cannot pay for a police detail. The intersection at Abbott and Exchange clearly needs a crosswalk painted. It seems to have been forgotten--all the adjacent intersections have fresh crosswalks.

Pedestrians cannot safely cross on green if cars and even buses are blocking the street--that pedestrian walk light is about 10 or 15 seconds long only. It's absolutely not enough time during rush hour. Everyone ISN'T paying attention--and when motorists don't pay attention, a fix is needed.

City has assigned this issue to MPD. They can close it if they feel it has been resolved. Until resolution, it should remain open.

This issue has more votes to fix than almost any on the site, and it was only created a day or two ago. Issue has been assigned to MPD. Get some courage and stop *anonymously* closing an issue that many people obviously agree is important to fix.

The Malden Police Department is aware that pedestrian safety is an issue throughout the city. Exchange St has recently become the main route for pedestrians since the closure of Pleasant St near Abbot St. While Exchange St has been closed on occasion, to limit vehicular access for the long term is not realistic. If vehicles are not allowed to travel on Exchange St, this would just shift the traffic problems to the intersections of Rt60/Commercial ST and Florence/Main Sts. This would upset the traffic pattern currently in place. This would create gridlock on Rt60 as well as traffic backing up from Rt60, all the way to Washington St. This would completely block the ability for pedestrians to cross at any point.
While assigning a police officer to Exchange St would obviously mitigate the situation, to dedicate an officer to this location every day would be predicated upon the resources that we have available on a given day and the volume of more emergent calls that require a police response. We will, most definitely, step up the monitoring of pedestrian traffic at this location, which includes the pick-up/drop off situations on Commercial and Exchange Sts.
While the police presence will help alleviate this situation, it is ultimately the responsibility of the pedestrians to know when to safely cross the street by watching for the proper traffic signal and by staying off of their mobile devices when crossing. Educating the motoring public is much easier then educating the pedestrian public. Common sense should dictate.
As far as creating a temporary pedestrian crosswalk, the Engineering Department is better served to answer this question.

I just got off the train and I watched for two light cycles. Both cycles, motorists blocked the crosswalk for the first half of the pedestrian cycle, and a car remained in the intersection, encroaching on the crosswalk.

It's 90 out. I didn't feel like standing there longer to watch more cycles.

Hopefully the crossings and sidewalks can be made safer for those with wheelchairs, strollers, etc, because the sidewalks and crossings in this city are very challenging. It pains me to see neighbors in wheelchairs forced into the street due to the narrow and obstructed sidewalks and improperly positioned ramps, or struggling to get a stroller up onto a sidewalk at the edge of a poorly-implemented crosswalk. . Someone is going to be badly hurt. The new construction going on does not seem to be adequately addressing these access issues.

This intersection has been a mess for a while.... Money trumps safety.
