I have witnessed at least 5 accidents at the intersection of Raven Ridge and Falls of the Neuse. This is one of the most poorly constructed intersections in North Raleigh. I am not sure why the police or other authorities have not reported the multiple accidents to you, perhaps someone in your office should look into that. The intersection should have been designed with a right turn lane on each side of Raven ridge as well as a left turn signal. If you send your investigators out to observe traffic, I suggest you do that both between 6:45 am to 8:45 am and again from 4pm to 7 pm. The fact that most of us affected by that intersection are very observant and cautious drivers should not enter into the blatantly obvious need for a dedicated left turn signal for East/west bound traffic. I drive through this intersection every day. The problem is worst around 8am and 5pm when the traffic along Raven Ridge backs up. Please take a look and you will see that there is a need to fix it.

The intersection is worst in the morning around 7am to 8am, and in the evening around 4pm to around 6pm. The intersection is poorly timed (with traffic backing up on Raven Ridge while it takes up to 90 seconds for the intersection to cycle, causing some to get impatient and run the red light), poorly designed (with right-turning traffic blocked by traffic trying to go straight through), and with insufficient visibility--especially when going straight through on Raven Ridge. (If going straight you need to slow down to 15 mph because the hump in the road makes it impossible for turning traffic to see oncoming traffic until the last possible moment.)

This left turn situation from Raven Ridge onto Falls of Neuse north bound is appalling. Even a leading green might alleviate some of the issue. Even for a seasoned driver this left turn is daunting. Many drivers end up turning on red. Let’s divert some funding from the bike lane projects or other lesser project to address this situation.

How about diverting commuter traffic from Wake Forest and then the congestion at FON and Ravens Ridge will not be an issue.

I have zero faith in the DOT and the engineers who have conducted the traffic studies for traffic flow north of 540. The intersection at Litchford Rd. for the new Olives Shopping Center is a perfect example.

DOT approved the turn lanes at Litchford Rd. and Falls of Neuse and didn't restrict southbound traffic making illegal turns left into the new shopping center which has backed up traffic, created head on possible collisions and repeated congestion. DOT must put up barriers to restrict this type of illegal turns and prevent head-on collisions. DOT and the City of Raleigh theat North Raleigh as a stepchild and if this were inside the belt line you wouldn't ever see this type of issue. Raleigh residents shouldn't bear the cost, congestion and traffic hazards caused by residents north and east of Raleigh so there should be a toll charged for this nuisance that might help offset costs to improving road safety and congestion. Check the north and southbound traffic and how fast they travel in a 45-mile an hour zone. Where is the police or county Sheriff when you need them to stop this continued safety issue?

The only way to divert commuter traffic from Wake Forest via FON is to install a toll road.
The tax paying citizens of Raleigh should not have to bare the burden of widening FON plus the impact to property values to accommodate commuter traffic from Wake Forest.
Hopefully the City of Raleigh and DOT will see the wisdom in widening 98 in an effort to ease the congestion on FON.
Residents ITB have been successful in campaigning against the widening of Ridge Rd. and residents on FON should be accommodated the same courtesy.

Look, it is inevitable that as people move to Raleigh, and as people have children who stay in Raleigh, that the area will grow--and either forcing people in Wake Forest to pay a toll whenever they want to drive to Raleigh, or forcing all traffic onto an alternate route (Capital?) is just kicking the can down the road. Worse, it invites further congestion with NIBYism, since people will simply consider congestion and tolls a price to pay to get to work, rather than as a discouragement from traveling--precisely the sort of stupidity I left California four years ago to escape.

And I don't think anyone here is asking for something as radical as limiting growth or restricting traffic along what has become key transportation corridors between Wake Forest and Raleigh.

I think all most of us want fixed is to resolve the rather dangerous intersection along Falls of Neuse and Raven Ridge--especially in light of increasing traffic flows during rush hour. Heck, you could fix some of the problems simply by widening Raven Ridge for the last 200 yards before the intersection to install a dedicated right-turn lane, and fix others by changing that perpetually flashing yellow turn signal when going northbound along Falls of Neuse into a dedicated turn signal. (Heck, for north-bound travelers on Falls of Neuse, the turn signal is already there; it should just be a matter of reprogramming it.)

Of course you still have the small hump in Falls of Neuse which makes visibility for on-coming traffic when traveling east/west along Raven Ridge to contend with; that's just begging for an auto accident as someone makes a left turn while someone else traveling straight can't see each other until the last possible moment. But even that can be fixed by creating a dedicated left-turn signal when turning from Raven Ridge in either direction onto Falls of Neuse.

For the recored we left Southern CA in 1994. Back then FON was a a 2 lane road and it was easily a 7 minute commute to get our children to school each morning.
We elected not to build in WF and chose the City of Raleigh and paid the price.
Fast forward and Wakefield Plantation was developed dumping more cars on FON and then decades later Heritage. Seems Wake Forest residents want to enjoy the quiet life with larger homes at a different price point and not be burdened with City of Raleigh taxes.
Simply put, the taxpayers of Raleigh should not have to bare the burden for road improvements to accommodate commuter traffic from WF to Raleigh. As a former resident of CA you can appreciate that in that state there is not forced busing or constant re-districting of the public school system. Perhaps with the officials in over seeing the Wake County School District could see the wisdom in neighborhood schools it would go a long way toward reducing commuter traffic. In the summer the traffic on FON is not nearly as congested.
