UDOT Traffic Signals assigned this issue to UDOT Region 1

This is by design-- when the RR Crossing is activated, the signals go red to control traffic that might block or otherwise infringe on the crossing. As we know all crossings can fail occasionally, so we will work with our signals team and the Utah Central Railroad to make sure that their crossing has been checked out and is functioning correctly.

Adding a left and right turn option will not block or infringe on the crossing. Fixing spurious signals doesn't eliminate the problem I described when the crossing is legitimately activated.

Traffic can back up to the Interstate if the crossing is activated during a period of heavy traffic. Wasn't someone just killed due to the same problem a few miles up the road?

Our region traffic engineer reports that the intersection functions this it does to provide storage for vehicles on the ramp when a train comes through. According to our traffic studies, the majority of the traffic through the I-15 & 24th Street Interchange turns right on 2550 South, and since the right turn lane is not very long, we have chosen to keep cars on the ramp and allow 24th St to move when the train comes. This whole area is one we are monitoring quite heavily. An full interchange is planned to be built here in 2023.

Since the majority of the traffic is turning right, why can't the right lane be dedicated to turning right at the intersection,, so that a single car going straight doesn't hold up traffic? The left lane can be for those c Ara going straight and turning left, since both of those actions require a green light.

The decision has been made for this intersection. UDOT will continue to monitor the traffic movements and interactions with the railroad, and provide that solution that we believe is in the best interests of all traffic movements. They are all interrelated, and must be considered that way.

Sorry, but a decision to close this within UT even taking more than 10 minutes to consider the suggestion kinda makes it seem like you aren't willing to actually consider a good idea. None of your responses have clearly refuted the idea of making the right lane a turn only lane, and shifting all thru- and left turning traffic to the left lane. How about letting your engineer consider the suggestion.

You originally filed your suggestion last August. Since then we have conducted a signal and intersection study, and our professional engineers, whose job it is to make decisions that do not put the state and taxpayers at risk, have made a decision that they believe-- and they have the responsibility for that-- best serves all of the traffic at 24th Street and 2550 South. They took a lot more than 10 minutes to make the decision. If you don't agree, that is certainly your right. But ultimately, they have to make the final call and . . . for now . . . and they have made theirs. They will continue to monitor this intersections operations. By the way, the entire interchange and all connections will be completely rebuilt in 2023, providing both SB off, and northbound on options that presently do not exist at all.
